W&L's Bolton Earns Scholar-Athlete Award

generals' women’s basketball Athlete Tabbed For ODAC/Farm Bureau Honor

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee women’s basketball player, Becca Bolton, is one of five student-athletes from Old Dominion Athletic Conference member schools to earn a 2011 ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award during the winter athletic schedule.  Bolton, the Generals first-ever women’s basketball player scholar-athlete honoree, was tabbed from a pool of nominees by a vote of each of the conference's sports information directors.

The ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar Athlete Award is given to a student-athlete in each of the conference's 22 sponsored sports.  Farm Bureau Insurance of Virginia is the presenter of each of the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Awards, forming a partnership with the ODAC to emphasize the NCAA Division III philosophy of the complete student-athlete experience.  To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore standing and have spent at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, must maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and must have participated in at least 50-percent of the team's events as a starter or key contributor.

Bolton, a junior forward from Pittsboro, North Carolina, is double majoring in biology and environmental studies.  In the classroom, she sports a 3.645 grade point average and she spent the first half of the season studying at the Duke University Marine Lab.

On the court, Bolton finished the season eighth in the league in scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg). She also became the ninth W&L player in program history to register 1,000 career points as part of her school-record 39-point effort in a win over Lynchburg College.  Bolton also scored 20 or more points in six games and recorded three double-doubles on the season.

"We are proud of the accomplishments of every one of our student-athletes," says ODAC commissioner Brad Bankston. "It is especially gratifying to be able to recognize those who personify the definition of ‘student-athlete' through these awards, and we are proud to be affiliated with Farm Bureau Insurance in this program."
