Generals Finish Ninth at NCAA Women's Golf Championships

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. --- The NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship completed on Friday and the No. 9 Generals of Washington and Lee University finished ninth overall and recorded a scorecard of 334-315-317--966 (+90). 

W&L bounced back from a rough start to the tournament on Tuesday, 42 strokes over par, with a 20 stroke improvement after the second round (+22) and a 25-over third round. The tournament was originally scheduled to be a 72-hole championship event but turned into a 54-hole tournament after the NCAA committee determined the course unplayable on Thursday afternoon which canceled the day's 18 holes. 

The squad's sole possession of ninth place is the best finish in program history; the Generals tied for ninth in 2021.

The Blue and White entered into the day at 11th and jumped up two positions on the team leaderboard thanks to ten birdies on Friday. Sophomore Marcella Mercer scored an eagle on hole 14, also. 

The Generals shot 79 or better on three occasions, An Shelmire shot one-under par on Wednesday, the best 18-holes for the Generals. Julia Heatzel and Laetitia Roegner capped off the tournament with 76 (+3) and 79 (+6) scorecards, respectively.  

Overall, Shelmire had the best finish for W&L, 17-over-par, and tied for 19th overall. The sophomore recored eight birdies through the three rounds and classmate Roegner finished T33 at 22-over. After the first day jitters, Rogener settled into consistent play with an 80 (+7) and 79 (+6) card over the final two rounds. 

Senior Megan Kanaby, who was named WGCA All-America Honorable Mention on Wednesday night, finished her college career with a T45 placement. At the WGCA awards banquet, Kanaby became the first player in program history to be honored by the WGCA with All-America honors each of their four years at W&L. 

Kanaby also received All-Region accolades along with sophomores Marcella Mercer and Laetitia Roegner.
