Hornets Set to Travel to Emory
LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The Lynchburg College men's
soccer team defeated Transylvania University (KY) 3-1 Thursday in
the first-round of the 2010 Division III Tournament. The Hornets
now advance to the second round of the tournament, and will play
Emory University in Atlanta on Sunday at 6 p.m.
Senior forward Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) scored at
the 23:56 mark of the first half on a feed from Tyler Romano
(Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) and the score remained 1-0 until
intermission.
Junior midfielder Zach Rusk (pictured on kick - Dale City, VA/C.D.
Hylton) converted a penalty kick at 70:56 after Donald Hart III
(Springfield, VA/Paul VI) was fouled in the box on a breakaway
attempt. The Hornets added an insurance goal four minutes later as
Kyle Symczak (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) scored from Shane
Spanninger (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) to make it 3-0. The
Pioneers got on the board at 81:20 as Kevin Jones assisted Kyle
Smith, but the LC defense made the lead stand up.
Freshman keeper Michael Releford (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg, VA)
made four saves for LC and Alex Schmitt (pictured below) made
five stops for Transylvania (16-3-2).
The Hornets advance to the NCAA Tournament's second round for the
second-straight season. If the Hornets win Sunday, they will
advance to the NCAA Tournament 's Sweet 16.
