Generals Cruise Past Methodist into NCAA Second Round

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The 23rd-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team scored three second-half goals en route to posting a 3-0 triumph over Methodist on Thursday afternoon at Watt Field in the first-round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament.

First-year midfielder Viktor Dolberg (Clovis, Calif. / Floyd B. Buchannan) tallied the game-winner in the 54th-minute when he scored off of a cross from junior defender Patrick Barry (West Roxbury, Mass. / Roxbury Latin School).

Sophomore midfielder Andrew Kim (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) increased W&L's (16-3-2) lead to 2-0 just 5:15 later when he dribbled through the Methodist defense and then beat sophomore goalkeeper Alex Rabone (Dubai, UAE / Shattuck St. Mary's) to the far post.

Senior midfielder Ben Bayles (Fleming Island, Fla. / Fleming Island) netted the Generals' final tally of the match at the 69:39 mark on a penalty kick that followed a Methodist penalty in the box.  Bayles is now 5-5 on penalty kicks this season.

The Generals and Monarchs went into halftime knotted at 0-0, despite Washington and Lee out-shooting Methodist, 9-3, in the first half.

For the game, W&L held a 15-8 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore keeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played 83:09 of the match in goal for the Blue and White and stopped four shots. Junior Connor Hayward (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) saw the remaining 6:51 and collected one save. Rabone suffered the loss for the Monarchs, seeing all 90 minutes of action in net and finishing with two saves. Methodist also recorded one team save.

The loss ended an 11-game winning streak for the Monarchs, who finished the season at 14-5-3 overall.

The Generals return to the field on Sunday when they travel to Haverford to take on the Fords in second-round action of the NCAA Tournament. The match is set for a 1:00 pm start.
