Hughes, a sophomore from Salem, Va., helped Roanoke start off the season 2-0 after defeating a pair of teams ranked or receiving votes in the Top-25 Preseason Poll from D3soccer.com.  Hughes, who was named the MVP of the 20th Annual Roanoke Invitational, opened the scoring against #36 Richard Stockton as the Maroons' built a 3-0 lead.  RC eventually won the game, 3-1.  Hughes again tallied the first marker against 10th-ranked Emory University, helping pave the way to a 3-2 win over the Eagles.

Men's Soccer Honor Roll

Alex Utter, Bridgewater, Sophomore, Midfielder
Utter scored what proved to be the game-winning goal to lift Bridgewater to a 2-1 victory over Mary Washington, BC’s first win of the year.

Mitchell Leap, Eastern Mennonite, Senior, Forward
Leap took over 10^th place on EMU’s all-time scoring list in his first game this season, providing the game-winner against future ODAC opponent Shenandoah.  Leap was tripped in the box in the 64^th minute, then calmly stuck the penalty kick in the upper right for a 1-0 lead.  Saturday against St. Mary’s, the forward assisted defender Caleb Golladay on a goal to give the men the lead in the 48^th minute, only to have St. Mary’s rally for a late 2-1 win.  For his career, Leap now has 26 goals and eight assists for 60 points.  He is also seventh all-time in goals.

Luis Peralta, Emory & Henry, Sophomore, Forward
Peralta started the season off strong for Emory & Henry, tallying a hat trick on Thursday night against Ferrum … The North Moore HS graduate recorded two goals in the sixth minute, 10 seconds apart, and capped his hat trick just after the half in the 54th minute.

Freddy Gomez, Guilford, Junior, Forward/Midfielder
Gomez scored two of Guilford’s three goals in the Quakers’ 1-1 showing at the Piedmont Fall Invitational… tallied once in a 2-1 loss to Oglethorpe and added an insurance goal in Guilford’s 2-0 win over Piedmont. He moved into a tie for ninth placed at Guilford with 21 career goals.

Gregorio Pacheco, Hampden-Sydney, Senior, Defender
The senior defender and captain was a major factor in the Tigers two opponents being held to just 16 combined shots and three shots on goal. He also helped push tempo on the offensive end by keeping the ball moving forward and into the attacking box with numerous strong crossing passes.

Corey Sindle, Randolph, Sophomore, Forward
Sindle scored three goals and assisted on one other in the WildCats first-ever 3-0 start. Sindle scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon in a 7-0 win over Shenandoah University. He followed that up with a goal and an assist Sunday in a 6-0 win over Berkeley College (NJ). For his efforts, he was named MVP of the Tiger/WildCat Classic, hosted by Randolph and Hampden-Sydney College.

Connor Pierce, Washington and Lee, Senior, Midfielder
Pierce, a Generals' team captain, scored a goal and handed out an assist in Washington and Lee's season-opening 4-0 victory over Bluefield College.
