White to Play in Individual Singles Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Conference champion Washington and Lee University will represent the ODAC in the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Team Tournament, as announced last week.  Joining the team tourney is the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Individual Tournament, which announced its fields for singles and doubles play on Wednesday.

Hayden White will be the only individual competitor from the conference in the individual tournament.  He will be one of 32 players in the singles field.

Washington and Lee (15-3) will play host to a five-team pod covering the first three rounds of the team tournament on May 13-15.  Elizabethtown College (12-5) and Grove City College (11-2) will meet in the first round for a chance to play Emory University (20-3) in the second round.  Like the Eagles, both N.C. Wesleyan (12-2) and W&L received byes into the second round and will square off on day two.

The winner of Sunday’s third round contest will earn a trip to Claremont, Calif., and one of eight spots in the national quarterfinals.  The final three rounds of play, including the national championship match, will be played on May 24-26.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges will also be the host for the individual singles and doubles tournaments.  The individual championships consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams.  The draw for both sides of the individual event will be announced on the day of the team championship (May 26).  The individual tournament begins on May 27 and continues through May 29.

White, a sophomore from Baltimore, Md., will compete in the NCAA Singles Championship for the second consecutive season after garnering First Team All-ODAC laurels in both singles and doubles.  An All-American last year, White enters the NCAA Tournament with an 18-4 singles record and a 20-3 doubles mark.
