R-MC's Proffitt Wins 300th in Sweep of Eastern

ASHLAND, Va. --- Head coach Kevin Proffitt earned his 300th career win with the R-MC softball program in game one of a double header sweep over Eastern University on Thursday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets won game one by a score of 3-0 and won game two 9-1 after six innings

In game one, sophomore pitcher Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./ Patrick Henry) shutout the opponents and allowed only one hit, coming in the seventh inning. She recorded eight strikeouts in the game and improves to a 3-0 record.

In the bottom of the first inning, R-MC (6-0) would take the lead and never look back. Junior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va./ Brunswick), who was named the ODAC Player of the Week on Monday, hit her third home run of the season. Also scoring was sophomore Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./ Essex).

In the bottom of the second inning freshman Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./ Brooke Point) scored off of a pop fly to extend the lead to 3-0. Davidson finished with one run and one hit.

Game two of the double header saw the Yellow Jackets steal a total of 13 bases in the game. Maddie Stone (Glen Allen, Va./ Glen Allen) led the team with four stolen bases. She had one run and two hits in game two. Six other Yellow Jackets recorded a stolen base.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, R-MC scored four runs. Sophomore Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./ Grafton) scored after Jones singled to center field. Then junior Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill) hit a home run to left field the next at bat.

To end the game, Stone would hit a single to right center to send sophomore Diane McDaniel (Fauquier, Va./ Liberty) to home for the walk-off run.

Freshman Cameron Thompson (Virginia Beach, Va./ Kellam) earned her third victory of the season.

Jones, Toth, Stone and Roth all had two hits in game two.

R-MC will be in action this weekend at the Virginia Beach Blast. R-MC will play Rutgers-Camden and nationally ranked Manhattanville on Friday and Case Western Reserve and Buffalo St. on Saturday.
