Jackets Down PSU-Berks to Reach Regional Championship

GLASSBORO, N.J. --- Randolph-Macon softball moved into the regional championship for the third time in four years with a 3-0 win over Penn State Berks Saturday afternoon in Glassboro, New Jersey on the campus of Rowan University. It will be the first time R-MC is going into the final day with a 2-0 record and is one win away from the Glassboro Regional Title.

Offense came early on Day 2 for Randolph-Macon. Playing as the visitors, senior Harley Jones (Brodnax, Va. / Brunswick) led off the top of the second reaching base on an error. Sophomore Sami Davidson(Stafford, Va. / Brooke Point) sacrificed herself to move Jones to second. Sophomore Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va. / St. Margaret's) reached on a fielder's choice, moving Jones to third. Hill quickly stole second to put to Yellow Jackets in scoring position. That's when Sophomore Taylor Sanderford (Mechanicsville, Va. / Atlee) took advantage. She sent a single to right center, bringing Jones and Hill home with the two-RBI hit.

Starting pitcher Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va. / Lee-Davis), who scored her 12th win of the season and is undefeated, got a 1-2-3 inning, including a strikeout, in the bottom half of the inning. Through the whole game, Scott struck out two and allowed just two hits and two walks in her 17 appearance of the year, going four innings for the victory.

Jones had a big at-bat in the top of the fourth inning as well. She sent a homer to center field to lead off the inning, putting R-MC up 3-0. She finished 2-3 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored.

Freshman Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va. / Nansemond River) earned the save, her second of the year, as she got six of ten batters to strike out. She struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth, though did allow a walk in that frame. That was the only baserunner she allowed in three innings of work.

Outside of Sanderford and Jones, junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va. / Essex) also earned a hit, going 1-3 on the day.

Randolph-Macon now moves straight into the regional final that is set for tomorrow at 12:00 PM. The opponent will be the winner of the Game 5, which will feature Penn State Berks and the winner of the elimination game between Rowan and Staten Island.
