Shelley Sets Generals Career Assists Record in NCAA 2nd Round Win

LEXINGTON, Va. --- Senior attacker Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) broke the W&L career assists record, and junior attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) registered her 100th career goal to lead the second-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 19-5 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Watt Field.
 
The Generals (14-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game, with first-year attacker Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) leading the way with two of the goals. A tally by the Devils (16-1) momentarily stopped the run, but then another 4-0 spurt, highlighted by a goal and an assist by sophomore attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton), extended the margin to 8-1 with 16:28 remaining in the half.
 
FDU-Florham trimmed the deficit to 8-2 with 15:31 on the clock, but the Blue and White put the game away with a 7-1 onslaught to end the period to take a 15-3 lead into the break. During the run with 2:24 left in the half, Shelley dished a pass to sophomore midfielder Christina Cavallo (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes' School) on the right side. Cavallo took one step and fired the ball into the net, which gave Shelley the 137th assist of her career to set the W&L record.
 
The Generals outscored the Devils, 4-2, in the second to reach the final margin. The highlight of the half came when Faria tallied her fourth goal of the game and the 100th of her career in just her 39th contest.
 
Shelley finished the game with one goal and two assists. She now has 138 helpers over her four seasons. Shelley entered the contest tied with Leslie Bogart '03 for the all-time lead, as Bogart finished her career with 136.
 
Faria totaled four goals and two assists for six points. Schwab led the team with seven points on three goals and four assists. Bishop registered six points on a season-best five goals and one assist.
 
Senior midfielder Kit McNiff (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) had three goals and two assists, while leading the team with seven draw controls. Cavallo notched three goals on three shots. Junior midfielder McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) tallied five draw controls and two ground balls.
 
First-year goalkeeper Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) totaled seven saves in 54:26, while giving up five goals. Junior goalkeeper Sam Sunar (Montville, N.J./Mountain Lakes) stopped two shots, playing the final 5:34. The Generals led in shots, 26-17, and draw controls, 16-9.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Apap made three saves in 60 minutes, allowing 19 goals. Sophomore midfielder Kylee Garcia led the team with two goals and one assists, while first-year midfielder Katie Walsh notched two goals and a team-high five draw controls.
 
With the victory, the Blue and White extended its program-record winning streak to 18 games and its program-record home winning streak to 30.
 
W&L advances to the NCAA Regional semifinal round next Saturday, which the Generals will host. The Blue and White takes on 11th-ranked Ithaca in the contest with the game time still to be announced.
