Benne earns NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year

Adds Honor to ODAC Top Coaching Award

SALEM, Va. --- The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) voted women's soccer coach Phil Benne the 2007 South Region Coach of the Year.  This is the first time Benne has been awarded this prestigious honor.  He will be in the running for national coach of the year.

Benne, who just completed his 19th season at Roanoke, was named ODAC Coach of the Year after guiding the Maroons to the ODAC Championship game for the first time since 2001.  It was the fourth time he earned this honor and the first time since 1998.  His other two came in 1990 and 1992.  He won his 200th game in the season-opener vs. Richard Stockton on August 31.  He currently ranks among the top-25 in wins all-time in NCAA Div. III with 217 victories.

The Maroons set school records for goals (76), shots (489), shots on goal (249) and points (188) in 2007.  The 18-4-1 record was the best in school history along with the 18 wins.  The Maroons advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998 and won their first NCAA playoff game in school history against Methodist in early November.
