ATLANTA, Ga. --- The #11-ranked Lynchburg College women's soccer team got off to a quick start, but could not sustain the early energy, falling 2-1 to #8 Emory University in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer National Tournament.

Lynchburg got off to a fast start against the pod host, Emory. Four minutes in, Rachel Sadowski was awarded a free kick outside the box. She slid the ball over to Jessie Gonzalez who shot it through the keeper, Liz Arnold's, arms for her seventh goal of the season and the early lead.

It took Lynchburg until the 70th minute to net its initial tally the first time these two teams faced back on September 15.

Emory managed to take the lead into halftime on two key plays late in the first.

The Eagles had the ball in the middle of the field when Kelly Costopoulos passed to Charlotte Butker. The junior, Butker, one-touched the ball along the sideline where Jennifer Grant could get it over the head of Tess Frelick to even the game.

Emory took the lead two and a half minutes before the half ended when the Hornets were called for a foul trying to clear the ball. Clare Mullins took the penalty kick for the Eagles and went to the low-left corner for the 2-1 halftime advantage.

The Eagles made several pushes in the second half, but Lynchburg managed to turn them away each time to keep the game within one goal.

Frelick finished with two saves in net for the Hornets while Arnold made four for the Eagles. Lynchburg outshot Emory 15-10 while holding a 4-3 lead in corners.

Lynchburg's season will end with a school record 22 wins, finishing with a record of 22-2. Both defeats were to Emory in Atlanta.

Emory (16-3-1) will advance to play #4 Wheaton College (Ill.) next weekend at a location to be determined.
