CHRISTINA FERNANDES, Virginia Wesleyan College, Sophomore, Forward

Fernandes, a sophomore from Tinton Falls, N.J., helped spark the Marlins to a 2-0 week.  She scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Salisbury University, knocking the ball in in the 52nd minute.  She also came through with an assist in the Marlins’ 3-1 victory several days later over Eastern Mennonite University.  She was the only Marlin to score in both games.  VWC is now 3-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the ODAC.  Fernandes tops VWC’s balanced scoring with six points (2g, 2a).

Women's Soccer Honor Roll

Melanie Waters, Bridgewater College, Freshman, Forward
Waters scored one goal and added two assists to help lead the Eagles to a 1-0-1 record on the week. The Eagles tied Shenandoah, 2-2, in non-conference play with Waters assisting on Sara Taylor’s game-tying goal late in the contest.  BC opened its ODAC season with a 3-1 victory over E&H. Waters scored the first goal of the game and then assisted on what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Abby Diffenbach, Eastern Mennonite University, Senior, Goalkeeper
Diffenbach set the EMU record for career saves in Saturday’s game at Virginia Wesleyan. The four-year starter notched a season-high 14 saves to keep her team in the game against the Marlins.  The big game also vaulted her past Joy Shaiebly (377) for the EMU mark.  Diffenbach currently has 387 career saves, including an ODAC-best 55 this season.  She also set the school record for saves in a season (140) in 2009 and this year is on pace to set personal marks for goals against average and save percentage.

Melissa Hubbard, Hollins University, Sophomore, Defender
Hubbard notched three straight assists and then a goal in four consecutive scores for Hollins on Sunday.

Jessica Gonzalez, Lynchburg College, Sophomore, Midfielder
Gonzalez scored a pair of game-winning goals as Lynchburg went 2-0 in the Shellenberger Classic this weekend. She scored from 35 yards out 10 minutes before halftime Saturday against Salisbury to give LC a 2-1 lead that would stand up. Gonzalez broke a 1-1 tie Sunday with 16 minutes left on a direct kick from 40 yards out that just got over the Maryville keeper.

China Bradley, Randolph-Macon College, Senior, Goalkeeper
Bradley kept the Yellow Jackets within striking distance with 12 saves against Mary Washington.  She recorded a shutout against the Hollins’ attack with seven saves on Saturday.

Steph Parenteau, Roanoke College, Sophomore, Forward
Parenteau notched eight points in the Maroons 2-1 week.  She put up a hat-trick in the Maroons 8-0 over Randolph College, and followed that up with a tally in a 4-0 win over Christopher Newport.
