Women’s Tennis Tournament Starts Friday

Top-Ranked W&L Continues Road to Second National Title

SALEM, Va. --- Sweet Briar College opens its campus to championship play this weekend as the 2008 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Tennis Tournament begins Friday morning.  Washington and Lee University, the reigning ODAC and NCAA Division III national champion, enters as the top-seeded team after posting an eye-popping 20-0 spring record (21-0 with one dual match win in the fall).

Play begins at 9:00 a.m. in Sweet Briar with three matches slated for the early morning jump.  In all there will be 18 matches played over three days (all places played out) with the tourney's champion being determined on Sunday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m.

In 10 ODAC regular season contests, the Generals didn't lose a single set in rolling to a 10-0 league mark.  In fact, W&L managed to win all but 14 sets through its spring campaign, all the more impressive when you consider the blue and white's schedule included nationally ranked Williams (#2), Emory (#4), Mary Washington (#7) and Wellesley (#8), among others.

Bridgewater College and Hollins University put together solid campaigns in earning the #2 and #3 ODAC seeds.  The Eagles' only conference setback came against Washington and Lee, while Hollins fell to both Bridgewater and the Generals.
