W&L Women's Tennis Falls to Emory

Singles Tournament On-Deck for Lukas, Meighan

ATLANTA, Ga. --- The Washington and Lee women's tennis team was defeated by No. 5 Emory, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon in NCAA Tournament third round action.

The Generals dropped two of three doubles matches, earning their lone victory at No. 3 doubles, as first-years Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va./Flint Hill) and Meghan Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) downed Taylor Brandt and Jordan Wylie of Emory, 8-4.

W&L went on to lose at No. 1 and 4 singles, but bounced back with a win by senior Lauren Lukas(Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) at No. 2 singles after her opponent, Wylie, retired in the second set. The deciding matchup for the Eagles came when Zahra Dawson took down first-year Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C./Ashley Hall), 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, allowing Emory to seal the 5-2 win over the Generals.

W&L completes its season with a 20-6 overall record.

With the loss, the Generals will now send Lukas and Meighan to the NCAA Division III Singles Championships to be held on May 24-26 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
