FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- The fourth-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team fell to 13th-ranked MIT, 5-3, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at Mary Washington.
The Generals took the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, senior duo Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va. / Flint Hill) and Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C. / Ashley Hall) posted an 8-5 win, and first-year Michelle Fleenor (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Girls Preparatory School) and senior Kelsey Vella (Sussex, N.J. / Blair Academy) notched a 9-7 victory at No. 3 doubles for a 2-1 lead entering singles play.
Sophomore Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) logged a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. However, the Engineers took Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles to close out the match.
The Generals finished with a 24-5 overall record, while MIT improved to 18-5 and will take on Amherst in the quarterfinals on May 18.
