ODAC Announces All-ODAC Women's Tennis Awards

FOREST, Va. --- The University of Lynchburg and Sweet Briar College collected seven all-conference honors and one special award each while Washington and Lee University earned five first team laurels and the remaining two special individual plaudits to highlight the 2021 All-ODAC Women's Tennis Awards.

Generals junior Taylor Garcia earned ODAC Player of the Year honors, while first-year teammate Gabi Moss received ODAC Rookie of the Year recognition. Sweet Briar mentor Dustin Hale was tabbed the ODAC Coach of the Year by his peers. Lynchburg senior Ellen Druebbisch garnered ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete by the league's athletic communications personnel.

Much has changed since the last round of women's tennis All-ODAC awards two seasons ago, but there are a few players on this season's chart that earned recognition in 2019. Both Garcia and Lynchburg all-time wins leader Christina Harris repeat as the All-ODAC First Team top-flight singles players. Harris's Hornets teammate, Alissa Anderson, formed one-half of the 2019 first team duo at #2 doubles and repeats that positioning this season with new partner Lauren Pascadlo.

Anderson maintained her positition on the All-ODAC Second Team at #3 singles. Teammate Druebbisch also held serve at #5 singles, retaining her second team distinction from 2019.

Garcia, a junior from Mandeville, La., went 10-2 in top flight singles matches this season, helping Washington and Lee to a 9-0 ODAC record and a 14-2 overall mark. The Generals are currently ranked 18th in Division III and fifth in the Atlantic South Region by the ITA. Garcia is the third-ranked player in the region and was just selected to participate in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament singles competition. Garcia went 5-0 in conference play, all at #1 singles, and led Washington and Lee to their 18th straight and 30th overall ODAC women's tennis crown. Garcia competed with Margaret Carlton in doubles competition with the duo posting a 7-4 record from the top position. That included a 3-1 record in conference play.

Hale is in his fourth season guiding the Vixens tennis program and seventh overall as a collegiate head coach in men's and women's tennis. Hale helped lead the Vixens to the three seed in the ODAC Tournament and ultimately the program's first appearance in the ODAC championship match in the conference's head-to-head team tournament era. Sweet Briar's improvement has been evident over the past two seasons, going from 2-17 overall in 2018-19 to 6-2 in last year's shortened campaign and 10-5 in 2021. Sweet Briar's season is not over as doubles duo Ruth de Souza and Allison Wandling will represent the Vixens in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis doubles competition, as announced by the NCAA on May 13. Thru the 2020-21 season, Hale owns a 104-69 (.601) overall record including a 44-46 (.489) mark in the women's tennis ranks.

Moss, a first-year from Paradise Valley, Ariz., won matches at each of the top-three ladder positions in singles play in her first season in Lexington. She posted a 7-2 overall record, going 3-0 at #1, 3-1 at #2, and 1-1 at #3. She was also 5-0 against ODAC competition and contributed to victories in all three conference tournament matches. Moss went 12-1 in all doubles matches with four different partners. She and Becket Waters went 9-1 together including 5-0 in league play on the way to securing All-ODAC First Team laurels. They were 6-1 at #2 and 3-0 at #1.

Druebbisch, a senior from Jamestown, N.C., pairs this honor with a second straight appointment to the All-ODAC Second Team at #5 singles. Druebbisch maintains a 4.0 grade point average as a biomedical science major with minors in biology and health promotion. She is slated to continue her studies at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina focusing on a Master's Degree of public health/registered dietician. Druebbisch won the Robert L. Hill Distinguished Senior Award, the highest combined academic and service award for undergraduates at Lynchburg. The Westover Honors fellow served as Lynchburg's SAAC President, has been a Relay for Life captain, peer tutor in chemistry, and was named Lynchburg's Academic Athlete of the Year in 2019 and 2020. Druebbisch's generous nature was demonstrated during the summer of 2020 when she donated a kidney to a childhood friend in need.

On the court, Druebbisch went 11-3 in all singles matches this season, including 7-1 in conference play on the way to her second all-conference nod. She was 9-3 at the #5 position, but also picked up one win each at the #1 and #4 flights. She participated in just two doubles matches, going 1-1 with Anderson at #2. Druebbisch helped Lynchburg to a 14-3 overall record and 9-1 in ODAC play on the way to the second seed and a semifinal berth in the conference tournament.
