Generals Cruise Past St. Mary's in NCAA Women's Tennis First Round

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The No. 21 Washington and Lee women's tennis team opened play in the NCAA Division III Championship on Friday with a 5-0 win over St. Mary's (Md.) in the first round.
 
The Generals improve to 16-6 overall with the win, while the Seahawks end their season at 11-8 overall.
 
W&L breezed to a 3-0 lead through doubles play with a trio of 8-0 wins. Senior Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La. / Mount Carmel Academy) and Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) took the top spot, junior Becket Waters (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) and sophomore Gabi Moss (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Chaparral) claimed victory at No. 2 and sophomores Nell Covington (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) and Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) rounded it out at No. 3.
 
In singles, Waters and junior Marta Mikos (Willowbrook, Ill. / Hinsdale South) collected the two remaining clinching points in the match. Waters finished first with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hallie Hershey at No. 3, followed by Mikos by a 6-0, 6-2 mark over Amber Manspeaker at No. 4.
 
The Generals advance to the second round on Saturday, where they will host No. 15 Mary Washington and 1:00 pm.
