ROANOKE, Va. --- Hollins University and athletic director David Zinn are excited to announce that Bill Shook has been named new head volleyball coach. Coach Shook will take over the program as it enters its second season of ODAC play after a six year hiatus. In addition to his coaching duties, Shook will also serve as an instructor in the physical education department.
"I am very happy that Bill Shook has accepted our offer to become the new volleyball coach at Hollins University." Zinn continues, "Coach Shook brings a great deal of experience, passion, and success to the program and I am confident that he will quickly build on the strong foundation that has already been created here."
Coach Shook brings a wealth of experience to the Hollins volleyball program. Some of his accomplishments include: 49 total scholastic championships (collegiate & HS) in volleyball and tennis (nine regular season tournaments, 18 conference championships, 15 regional championships, seven High School State Championships); USA Volleyball Carolina Region Robert L. Lindsay Meritorious Service Award (2002); nine "Coach of the Year" honors; inducted into Centennial HS Hall of Fame; and became just the fourth male coach to be inducted into the Howard County, Md., Women's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
Shook was the head coach at NCAA Division-II Mars Hill College from 1994-2003 where he also served as a faculty instructor in the physical education department. Since his time at Mars Hill, he has been the head volleyball coach at Division-III Piedmont College and most recently as head volleyball and tennis coach at Lindsey Wilson College. He also spent 15 years working with USA Volleyball including: Juniors Rep in both the Chesapeake and Carolina Regions, original member of the USAV National Committee for High Performance Programs and the juniors athlete "pipeline", and as an apprentice coach with the 1992 and 1995 US Women's Teams pre-Olympic squads. For the Summer Olympics in 1996, Shook worked under the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games as an Assistant Supervisor of Statistics at the volleyball venue.
Prior to his 13 years as a head coach at the collegiate level, Shook was the head coach of the Centennial High School volleyball and tennis teams in Ellicott City, Maryland, where he claimed four state volleyball championships and three state tennis championships. Shook also was the founder and technical director of the Columbia Volleyball Club (10 years), which is now the longest running juniors program in the state of Maryland.
For the past 25 years Coach Shook has served as an instructor at NCAA Division-I volleyball camps (College of Charleston, Clemson, ETSU, Furman, Georgetown, Maryland, North Carolina, Penn State/Juniata, Tennessee, UNC-Charlotte, U.S. Naval Academy) and has run his own clinics and private lessons in volleyball, tennis and swimming for 30 years. He also has international coaching experience as he has served as a head coach at the World Volleyball Training Center in Huguenot, New York, which led to coaching experiences in Norway, Japan, and China.
"I am honored to join the professional staff at such a prestigious school as Hollins University. I am excited to take Hollins volleyball through the next phase of re-establishing a program that will compete regularly at the top of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. I look forward to challenging our student-athletes to be the best that they can be both on the court and in the classroom," stated Shook.
Shook will take over all aspects of the Hollins volleyball program beginning July 1st. He is married to Kathy Shook with two daughters Lauren and Kimberly. Lauren graduated from Western Piedmont (NC) and Kimberly graduated from UNC-Greensboro (NC) where she played volleyball.
