Washington and Lee's Boles Headlines ODAC Volleyball Awards

Generals' Snyder, Wasps' Pennington, VWC's Martens also Honored

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University senior outside hitter M.A. Boles was tabbed the ODAC Player of the Year for the second time as part of the All-ODAC volleyball awards.  Generals' mentor Bryan Snyder was named the ODAC Coach of the Year, while Emory & Henry College outside hitter Tristen Pennington earned ODAC Rookie of the Year accolades.  Virginia Wesleyan College senior Tempe Martens was selected as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league's sports information directors.

Boles, from Houston, Texas, previously earned the ODAC's top volleyball honor in 2011.  The Generals' standout became the conference's all-time most prolific attacker earlier this season, taking over the top spot on the career kills list, a feat she also accomplished in W&L's record books.  For her career, she's notched 1,706 kills (current thru the ODAC tournament), surpassing the 1,656 posted by former Roanoke College standout Heather Cook (2000-04).   This season, Boles has already topped 400 kills for the fourth straight season, entering the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament with an ODAC-best  407 winners.  She's been responsible for 471.5 points earned for W&L, the highest mark in the conference.  Her 356 digs sit 10th on the league charts, and she's posted 15 double-doubles this year.

Snyder is in 14th season guiding the Washington and Lee volleyball program, having put together a career record of 394-106 (.788) thru ODAC tournament play, which also happened to be his 500th match guiding W&L volleyball.  This is his ninth ODAC top coaching laurel, having previously garnered the recognition in 2010 and 2011 in addition to six straight from 2001-06.  His Generals picked up the program's 14th overall ODAC volleyball title, the 10th earned under his direction.  The team will be making its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance during Snyder's tenure.

Pennington, a freshman from Kingsport, Tenn., stepped in to become one of the conference's top attackers.  Her 3.11 kills per set average sits fourth in the ODAC, powered by 305 total winners.  She posted nine double-doubles on the season, including season-highs of 25 kills and 20 digs against Covenant in late September.  The 25 kills are the most by an ODAC student-athlete this season.  She was responsible for 346.5 points this season, the sixth highest total in the conference.

Martens, from Severna Park, Md., maintains a 3.95 grade point average as a Psychology and Business double major.  She is a five-time honoree on the VWC Dean's List as well as a member of the Honors & Scholars program.  She is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma (freshman academic) and Chi Alpha Sigma (collegiate athletic) national honor societies.  On the court, Martens has positioned herself inside the Marlins' top-10 list in career kills from her outside hitter post.  This season, she posted 192 total kills to go with 212 digs.  Her career totals stand at 712 kills and 622 digs in 347 sets over 99 matches.
