Generals Upended by Mount Union in NCAA Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio --- The Washington and Lee volleyball team lost to 12th-ranked Mount Union, 3-0, on Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Wittenberg University.

The Raiders (29-5) hit .292 with 48 kills on 106 attempts to beat the Generals (27-7), 25-21, 25-14, 25-22. W&L was held to a .147 hitting percentage with 28 kills on 102 attempts.

After losing the first two sets, the Blue and White trailed 15-9 in the third. The Generals won 11 of the next 16 points to tie the score at 20-20, but Mount Union won five of seven points to close out the match.

Junior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) led W&L with 11 kills, while sophomore middle blockerMackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) totaled seven kills on just 16 attempts for a .438 hitting percentage.

Junior outside hitter Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) led the back row with 11 digs and added five kills. Junior setter Alex Kinzer (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) registered 11 assists, while first-year setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside) had eight assists and three kills.

Senior right side Nicole Snyder led the Raiders with a match-high 18 kills on 28 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Junior middle hitter Kara Berger tallied 10 kills, and senior defensive specialist Lauren Mastroine notched a match-high 17 digs.

The Raiders advance to the second round where they will face the winner of a match between fourth-ranked Wittenberg and Cabrini. The Generals have now completed their season after claiming their 15th ODAC Championship and third in a row.
