Randolph-Macon Falls to Swarthmore in NCAA Volleyball First Round

OWINGS MILLS, MD. --- Randolph-Macon came in ranked as the #4 seed in the Owings Mills Regional, but failed to overcome their opponent, the #5 seeded Swarthmore Garnet. The loss ends Randolph-Macon's 2017 campaign with a 23-7 overall record.

In the first set, Randolph-Macon got out to the fast start, scoring the first two points. Randolph-Macon battled back and took the lead 5-3. But Swarthmore took eight of the next nine points to take the lead back 8-13. The Garnet never gave the lead back winning the set 25-15. R-MC was outhit by Swarthmore by a .048 to .238 margin. Sophomore Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va. / James River) led the team with three kills in the set while senior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va. / Kettle Run), junior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va. / Riverheads) and sophomore Miranda Hall(Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) each had two kills. Clark and fellow junior Emily Fitzwater (Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) added two blocks. Fitzwater, senior Julia Stech(Chester, Va. / LC Bird) and freshman Mackenzie Loewe (Leonardtown, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) each had four digs.

Swarthmore got out to the quick start again, getting leads of 1-2 and 2-3 but R-MC pulled back to a 4-4 tie. Swarthmore advanced further with five of the next eight points. R-MC pulled it within one three times at 12-13, 13-14 and 14-15 before gaining ties of 18-18 and 19-19. R-MC then took the lead at 20-19 and 21-19. But Swarthmore took the set to the set point at 21-24. That's when R-MC battled back to 24-24 and to 25-25. The Yellow Jackets then took the lead and had their own set point opportunity, but the Garnet got the final three points to win the set 28-26. R-MC was again outhit by the Garnet, .188 to .146.

Swarthmore took the early lead in set three, going up 1-6 to start the set before an R-MC timeout. The Garnet added one more before R-MC began its own run. The Yellow Jackets scored 11 of the next 16 points to tie the score at 13 apiece. R-MC got behind again, 15-17 and 18-19 and were never able to get ahead again, losing the set 25-22. The Yellow Jackets hit .190 in the final set, making 14 kills and six errors on 42 attacks.

Wolfe finished with 12 kills and only two errors on 25 attacks for a .400 kill percentage. Hall finished with nine kills and McGilvery added seven.

Senior Erin Quinn Morrisville, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) totaled 17 assists, the team leader. McGilvery led the team defensively with 21 digs.

At the net, Clark finished with the team lead in blocks with three while senior Colleen Beaver (Fredericksburg, Va. / Massaponax), Fitzwater and McGilvery each totaled two.

R-MC completes in 2017 campaign with its seventh NCAA appearance, ending in the first round. Look for a full volleyball recap coming next week.
