Hollins Tabs McGee as Volleyball Interim Head Coach

ROANOKE, Va. --- Director of Athletics, Myra Sims, recently announced that David McGee will be taking over as the interim head coach of the Hollins volleyball team.

"Hollins is fortunate to find a coach like Dave McGee in our own backyard," Sims said. "Dave has a strong reputation in the region for his work as a high school coach, both at James River and at Bath County, and for his work with Roanoke United Volleyball Club. His teams have consistently advanced to district, region and state tournament play, so it is clear that he is able to execute effective coaching strategies. His educational background in sports psychology and as a USA Volleyball level 1 and 2 certified coach also gives him a strong base for player development and recruiting. Dave's approach to coaching centers on creating a positive environment and developing respectful relationships with the athletes. I think his philosophy of developing players on and off the court will work really well at Hollins."

Since 2010, McGee has been the head volleyball coach of the 16's Open team for the Roanoke United Volleyball Club, and, since 2012, has been the head coach of the James River High School volleyball team. While at James River, he has led the Knights to five district championships and two region championships and took the team to the VHSL state quarterfinals in 2012.

Prior to his time James River, he was the head coach at Bath County High School from 2004-2012. He took Bath County to three-straight VHSL state semi-final appearances, bringing home a state championship in 2011. He was also named the 2011 VHSL Coach of the Year. He developed a feeder program for youth volleyball in the Bath County area and helped the team to a winning season in his inaugural year, the school's first in over 20 seasons. In his nine years at the helm at BC, he was voted the District Coach of the Year five times and Region Coach of the Year three times.

"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to coach at Hollins," McGee said. "I've met the team and they seem like a wonderful group of athletes to work with. I look forward to the season and hope to continue the growing success of Hollins volleyball.

McGee graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics before earning his master's degree in kinesiology with a focus in sports psychology from A.T. Still University, in Mesa, AZ.
