ODAC Golfers Set to Tee Off in Championships on Sunday

Men’s and Women’s Events to Play 54 Holes at Rock Barn

CONOVER, N.C. ---  Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C., is set to host the 2014 ODAC Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships beginning Sunday morning thru Tuesday afternoon.  Each of the conference’s nine men’s programs and five women’s squads will take to the rolling hills in the Greater Hickory area for 54 holes apiece.

The men open at 8:00 a.m. with the first of three rounds on the Jones Course.  The custom par-72 layout covers 6,944 yards.  The women will compete on the Jackson Course and also play to a par of 72.  That custom setup reaches 5,801 yards.

Guilford College enters the tournament as the seventh-ranked men’s squad in NCAA Division III by Golfstat.com.  The Quakers lead the ODAC with a 299.4 per round average and are closely tracked by Hampden-Sydney College and its 300.6 average.  The Tigers rate 20th in the country.  Individually, H-SC’s Rick O’Connell and Brian Burt are ninth and 10th in the nation by Golfstat, while Guilford’s Tanner Gross chimes in 13th on that list.  The three own the ODAC’s best individual averages with Burt leading the way at 72.7.

On the women’s side, Randolph-Macon College looks poised to claimed its second straight team crown.  The Yellow Jackets average 346.8 strokes per round with Bridgewater College (363.8) and Washington and Lee University (381.2) rounding out the teams competing for just the second women’s trophy in ODAC history.  Individually, Hollins’ University’s Elizabeth Cheng leads the ODAC with a 78.4 average and is tightly followed by R-MC’s Olivia Bowling (79.2).  Cheng is rated 20th in NCAA Division III.
