Hampden-Sydney Joins LC in ODAC Title Game

LEXINGTON, Va. --- Hampden-Sydney senior forward Andrew Berg tallied the game-winning goal in the 86th minute as the seventh-seeded Tigers went on to defeat sixth-seeded Washington and Lee, 2-1, in the semifinal round of the ODAC men's soccer tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

Both squads played a strong first half, ending the opening 45 minutes in a 0-0 tie.

W&L (8-7-2) recorded its lone goal of the game in the 57th minute after junior midfielder Jamie Paldino tapped in a shot that bounced off Tigers (8-8-3) senior keeper John Robert Plyler to give the Generals a 1-0 advantage.

However, H-SC (8-8-3) responded almost a minute later when junior forward Bryan Wharton connected on a free kick just outside of the box to knot the score at 1-1.

W&L and H-SC played competitively the remainder of the second half, but Berg recorded his game-winner in the 86th minute after he picked up a rebound from a blocked shot by sophomore midfielder Nick DeProspero, giving the Tigers the 2-1 victory and advancing them to face either Lynchburg College or Randolph College in the ODAC Championship match on Saturday.

Senior keeper Will Dorrance (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) played all 90:00 for W&L, stopping five shots. Plyler also played the duration, recording six saves.

The Generals conclude their 2010 season with an 8-7-2 overall record.
