W&L Advances to Semifinals After Posting a 6-4 Edge on PK's against H-SC

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. ---  Washington and Lee advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Men's Soccer Tournament after posting a 6-4 edge on penalty kicks against Hampden-Sydney on Saturday evening at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field.

The Generals and Tigers played to a 2-2 draw after each team scored one goal in both periods.

Sophomore midfielder Miles Bent (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) tallied the first goal for the Generals (11-4-2) just 4:51 into the game. The Tigers (10-5-3) responded when sophomore forward Robert Kerby scored at the 44:04 mark to make it a 1-1 game at the break.

Kerby netted the Tigers' second goal of the game when he beat senior goalkeeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) in the 48th minute. First-year midfielder Sam Knapke(Glen Ellyn, Ill. / Benet Academy) netted the game-tying goal at the 63:39 mark, when he beat sophomore keeper Cameron McFarlane.

Neither team could find the game-winner in the overtime periods despite the Generals holding a 5-2 edge in shots during the extra sessions.

Senior midfielder Al Organ (St. Paul, Minn. / DeLaSalle), senior forward Zach Colby (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East), first-year forward Kevin Molnar (Mendham, N.J. / Delbarton School), Bent, Knapke and Civitarese all scored on penalty kicks to allow the Generals to advance.

Civitarese played all 110 minutes in goal and recorded four saves. McFarlane also saw the entire match in net for H-SC and posted six saves.

For the game, Washington and Lee out-shot Hampden-Sydney, 17-12. The Generals also took four corner kicks as opposed to the Tigers' two.

W&L will be back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Roanoke for a semifinal contest in the ODAC Tournament.
