Late Goals Send Lynchburg Past Washington and Lee for ODAC Men's Soccer Title

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The saying "better late than never" certainly favored Lynchburg College on Sunday afternoon as the Hornets got two goals late in regulation to overcome a 1-0 game-long deficit and wrap up the ODAC men's soccer championship with a 2-1 triumph over Washington and Lee University. The is an ODAC record 15th for the Hornets and their second in the last three years.

Lynchburg also earns the conference's automatic entry into the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament, which begins opening round play next week. The field of 62 teams will be announced via online selection show at 1:00 p.m. ET on Monday, November 7. Go to www.ncaa.com to watch the announcement live.

Both of Lynchburg's goals came inside of the final six minutes of action. Ben Grossfuss put the Hornets (16-1-4) on the board in the 85th minute. The senior striker put the finishing touch on a back-post cross by Ryan Mayolo, slotting home a header just beyond the out-stretched hands of W&L (15-4-1) keeper Gillen Beck.

The go-ahead and would-be game-deciding tally came just over two minutes later, and did so in unexpected and unintended manner. Lynchburg played a ball into the Generals' goal area when a W&L clearance attempt went awry. The ball glanced off a Generals defender's foot and spun back into W&L's net for an own goal.

That tally proved the final attempt on net for either team, resulting in a victory for Lynchburg.

The opening minutes of the game featured one shot and one save from both squads until W&L cracked open the scorebook. Will Hamryka punched in his sixth goal of the year with an impressive unassisted tally in the 14th minute. He hammered a cross-goal effort from outside the box just inside the far post to bring the Generals' faithful to their feet.

Grossfuss' goal gave him nine on the season, which ranks third in the ODAC.  Keeper Dylan McLaurin made four saves, including a key play with the game-tied 1-all where he came off his line and stopped a streaking Viktro Dolberg from driving deeper into the Hornets goal area and potentially making an effort on LC's net.

W&L's Beck also made four saves. As Lynchburg poured on the pressure in an effort to get back in the game in the second half, Beck came up big on one particular effort where he got his hands on a headed ball, tipped it off the crossbar and out of play.
