Brown’s OT Header Gives WildCats ODAC First Round Win

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Travis Brown scored his second goal of the game in overtime, to give the eighth-seeded Randolph College men's soccer team a 3-2 victory on Monday night.  The WildCats defeated the ninth-seeded Quakers to advance out of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Soccer First Round.

Things started fast for both sides, as Edgar Solis nearly headed in a goal in the first minute.  However, Erick Cortez-Martinez was there for the save to prevent Solis from getting another header goal.  Less than two minutes later, Adam Watson almost found the back of the net, with him being on the receiving end of a Cristian Irigoyen throw into the box.  But Eric Hayes copied his counterpart with the save.  Soon after, Hayes made a sprawling save to prevent Blake Heatherly from taking the lead.

Then in the 11th minute, the attack would pay off.  Joe Uzdavinis had the ball on the right side and fired a cross into the box.  Brown got his outstretched foot onto it, sending it by Hayes and into the mesh for a 1-0 lead.

The 'Cats continued the pressure over the final 35 minutes of the half.  Hayes made two more stops over that time to keep the deficit at one, while his defenders in front of him blocked several other shots.  Cortez-Martinez stopped the only other shot he saw in the half, keeping the WildCats with a 1-0 lead at the half.

Randolph opened up the second stanza looking to add to its lead.  Heatherly had a rip from deep, but Hayes was there once again to stop it.  Soon after in the 59th minute, Brown nearly headed in a ball, but it barely went over the crossbar.  The 'Cats continued to pour on the attempts without any luck, which included an outstanding chance from Jonathon Powell that just sailed high.

But the 78th minute would prove to feature a break through.  Heatherly stepped up to take a free kick 25 yards outside of the box after a foul.  He curled the ball over a host of players, where Irigoyen was there to kick it near the back post for a goal.

The elation did not last long, as Randolph committed a foul in the box, giving the Quakers a penalty.  Ricky Aguilar converted to halve the lead.  GC kept searching for the equalizer and found it with just over two minutes on the clock.  Leke Ademoyero used his speed to get behind some defenders and tied it at two, forcing the game into overtime.

In the overtime, it would not be long before the ball went out of bounds for a throw in on the right side of the field.  Irigoyen stepped up once again for the deep throw.  It got into the box, where it found the head of Brown.  He sent it in to complete his brace and finish off the Quakers.

For the second-straight time, the WildCats dominated GC statistically.  The 'Cats outshot their opponents 29-11 (10-4) and earned nine corners to one.  Hayes did a good job to keep Guilford (7-9-3 overall) in the game with seven saves.

Randolph (8-5-5) advances to the ODAC Quarterfinals, with the game set for Wednesday night.  The WildCats will travel across town for the 16th edition of the Hill City Derby (seventh time in the tournament), taking on Lynchburg College (13-1-4) at 7:30 p.m.
