W&L Advances to Semifinals with Win Over Bridgewater

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The second-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team defeated seventh-seeded Bridgewater for the second time in four days, posting a 2-0 victory over the Eagles in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Wednesday at Watt Field.

Neither team could crack the others' defense in the opening half, though both teams threatened on occasion.  The Generals (14-3-1) held an 8-4 edge in shots and the two teams entered the intermission level at 0-0.

W&L finally broke through in the 49th-minute when senior forward Geinda Smith (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) headed the ball into the back of the net off of a cross from sophomore midfielder Will Hamryka (Dawsonville, Ga. / Greater Atlanta Christian).

Bridgewater (9-8-2) pushed forward late, looking for an equalizer, and W&L took advantage with a counter attack in the 87th-minute for an insurance goal.  Junior forward Reeves Duggan (Birmingham, Ala. / Indian Springs School) led a 2-on-1 break with sophomore forward Tyler Runge (Manassas, Va. / Forest Park), finding Runge with a pass that beat the defender and left him 1-on-1 with BC senior keeper Mark Davis.  Runge slipped a low shot past Davis for the final margin.

The Generals outshot BC, 20-9, and held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played the full 90 minutes and made five saves for the Blue and White. Davis made six saves for Bridgewater in 90 minutes of action.

W&L returns to action on Saturday when it faces the victor of No. 6 Eastern Mennonite vs. No. 3 Roanoke in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament. The contest will be played at the highest remaining seed after today's games.
