Lutz Leads R-MC Past Virginia Wesleyan into Semifinals

ASHLAND, Va. --- Junior Bryan Lutz (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) nailed a pair of first-half goals, including one with two seconds left in the period, as the fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon men's soccer team topped fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 Wednesday afternoon on the R-MC Soccer Field in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (10-4-3), who lost to the Marlins (8-6-4) one week ago 3-0 in Virginia Beach, will face the winner of top-seeded Lynchburg and No. 8 Randolph on Saturday, Nov. 5, in the ODAC semifinals.

Lutz took a cross from sophomore Andrew Gyimesi (Midlothian, Va./James River) in the 31st minute and finished to give R-MC a 1-0 advantage. Lutz chased down a bad back pass and headed the ball in with two seconds left in the first half as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead into intermission. R-MC had a 13-6 advantage in shots in the first period.

Junior Liam Hogan (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) finished a corner kick from senior Logan McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./West Nottingham Academy) in the 67th minute as the R-MC lead grew to 3-0. VWC netted a goal in the 85th minute to make the final 3-1.

For the match, R-MC held a 19-12 advantage in shots. Lutz led the Yellow Jackets with four shots, including three on goal. Hogan and junior Peter Nelson (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington) each had three shots for the victors.

Sophomore Brian Breslin (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) recorded a pair of saves for the Yellow Jackets.

Junior Jacob McHugh (Aberdeen, Md./West Nottingham Academy) played well for R-MC on both offense and defense.
