Lynchburg Edges Randolph-Macon to Earn Spot in ODAC Title Game

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- There was a flair for the dramatic Saturday afternoon on Shellenberger Field where the Lynchburg men's soccer grinded its way to 1-0 overtime victory over Randolph-Macon. Senior forward Ben Grossfuss sent a cross to junior forward Collin Kashmer who let the ball settle off of his chest before firing the game winning goal that beat the Yellow Jacket keeper to the lower left corner to put the Hornets in the ODAC Championship game.

The Hornets would get their offense rolling in the opening minutes when senior Collin Kashmer took a free kick from 20 yards out and blasted it high on the RMC keeper Brian Bresin as he knocked the ball out for an unsuccessful Lynchburg corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Dan Friedberg would get in on the action for the Hornets during the 28th minute when he chipped a shot from 35 yards out only to stick it right in the hands of the keeper Bresin. Lynchburg continued to have opportunities when junior forward Fredy Flores knocked a header into the hands of the diving Bresin off a Thomas Salamone free kick.

The Yellow Jackets would get their chances as the game progressed into the 21st minute when midfielder Anthony Astruc sent a well struck shot sailing just wide left of the post after the diving Hornet goalkeeper Dylan McLaurindeflected the ball out of play.

A stalemate would ensue in the later parts of the half before Lynchburg forward Jon Mackey headed a shot right into RMC's keeper's hands off a corner throw with just 13 seconds left in the half. Bresin made six saves as the Hornets out shot RMC 9-5 in the scoreless first half.

Senior forward Ben Grossfuss would make his presence felt in the second half when he snagged a through pass where he then dribbled around the pulled out Gresin and fired a shot on net that was saved by the RMC defender Jack Maxey during the 41st minute.  The Yellow Jackets would answer back just two minute later when Astruc shook two Hornet defender and took a shot that was saved by McLaurin. The sophomore from Stafford County was busy yet again during the 28th minute when he elevated above the Yellow Jacket attack during a free kick to keep the ODAC semifinal contest scoreless.

RMC's best scoring opportunity came with 17:52 left in regulation when a crossing pass from the corner found the leg of Bryan Lutz who had an open look at the net but sent the shot sailing above the crossbar. Much like the later minutes of the first half the game saw the offense go stagnant with much of the action taking place in the midfield. The Hornets would get the ball into the Yellow Jacket's in the final minute and drew corner kick taken by Grossfuss with just 13 second left. The ball sliced just high of the crossbar as the ball landed on top of the net and the game headed to overtime.

In overtime the two team's wasted no time getting on the attack as the Yellow Jackets would apply the early pressure when Lutz beat his defender to the left side of the box where he ripped a shot that beat McLaurin but the ball would dribble just wide right of the net in front of a near silent Shellenberger Field. McLaurin and the Hornets would take a moment to regain their composure as he set up for a goal kick that he sent sailing to midfield. The ball would exchange feet before Grossfuss gained control on the left side of the pitch about 35 yards' out before crossing the ball into the box to find an open Kashmer who would settle the ball off of his chest before netting the game winning goal that beat the keeper on the lower left side to seal the ODAC semifinal victory.

A very even game from start to finish saw Lynchburg holding an advantage in corners 8-3 while the Yellow jackets outshot the Hornets 14-13. Breslin finished the contest with six saves for RMC while McLaurin had six to secure the shutout.

The Hornets will play the winner of #2 Washington & Lee for the ODAC Championship that is slated to begin at 1 pm tomorrow on Shellenberger Field.
