Guilford Reaches ODAC Men's Tennis Semifinals

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Turner Votipka's 6-4, 7-5 first-singles win over John Ross clinched Guilford College's 6-3 victory over Roanoke College in Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament quarterfinal match.

The third-seeded Quakers (11-4) advance to next Saturday's (5/2) ODAC Tournament semifinals at second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College, a 5-0 winner over number-seven Randolph College. Guilford took five-of-six singles matches from the sixth-seeded Maroons (8-8) to reach their fourth ODAC Tournament semifinal contest in seven seasons.

Roanoke (8-8) won two doubles points, including a tight 8-6 decision at second doubles where Ross and Jose Alvorado turned back the Quakers' Trevor Cox and Aaron Smedley, 8-6. Jacob Morris and Matt Kessler dispatched of Votipka and Erik Meiler, 8-2, at first doubles. The Quakers' Levi Bruff and Mason Church claimed an 8-5 third-doubles decision to get Guilford on the scoreboard.

Votipka overcame a 5-3 second-set deficit in his win-clinching triumph. He avenged Ross' three-set victory over Votipka at the teams' regular-season contest at Roanoke March 22. Guilford's Mason Church topped Alvorado, 7-6, 6-1, for the Quakers' sixth and final point.

Guilford's Meiler and Bruff both needed a third set in their victories. Meiler defeated Morris, 6-4, 0-6, 10-3 at third singles and Bruff pulled off a sixth-singles win, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, over Roanoke's Teeple.

Smedley joined Bruff as the Quakers' two two-time winners Saturday by downing Matt DelGreco, 6-4, 6-4, at fourth singles.

Coach Dave McCain's Quakers lost a narrow 5-4 decision to visiting Virginia Wesleyan March 29. The Marlins are hosting the 2015 ODAC Men's and Women's Tennis Tournament semifinals and finals May 2-3.
