Generals Extend Championships Lead

W&L and R-MC Win Three Events Each, Babington Qualifies for Nationals

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. ---
Washington and Lee University extended its lead at the ODAC/Atlantic States Swimming Championships on Saturday, winning three events to help open up a 156-point advantage over Randolph-Macon College.  The Yellow Jackets also won three events, while Greensboro College claimed the remaining top finish.

The swim of the day came from Randolph-Macon’s Tracilyn Babington on Saturday morning during the preliminaries of the 100-yard breaststroke.  Babington placed first in the overall preliminary with a time of 1:06.05, good enough to eclipse the NCAA B-cut qualifying mark of 1:06.57 and set a new ODAC record in the event.  She went on to the win the event in the finals that evening with a time of 1:06.60.  Teammate Kellianne Mullin finished third (1:10.45).  W&L’s Dana Fredericks (1:07.94) and Erin Schwartz (1:12.07) placed second and fourth, and Sweet Briar College’s Marian Huber (1:13.27) touched out in fifth.  Bridgewater College, which took home the most points in the event, saw Jeni Zeiler (1:14.78), Jennifer Lutz (1:17.15) and Laura Aldstadt (1:20.94) grab places 6-8.

Saturday’s finals began with W&L’s Jocelyn Cassada, Fredericks, Brittany Ross, and Izzy Brassfield claiming the 200-yard medley relay title with a time of 1:50.90.  Randolph-Macon (1:52.17) finished second with Sweet Briar (2:00.89) coming in third. 

Greensboro’s Emma Phillips out-paced the field by 10.3 seconds in winning the 400-yard individual medley with at time of 4:39.16.  The Generals’ Miche Szymczak, who won the preliminary round, touched the wall in 1:49.46 to place second.  Teammate Krista Camp (4:53.66) came in third and Randolph-Macon’s Brianna Lovell (4:55.82) finished in fourth.

Washington and Lee dominated the 100-yard butterfly by posting the top five times in the finals.  Ross (59.85) won the event, and was followed by Lauren Kasoff (1:01.45), Rebecca Guynn (1:02.58), Stephanie Krasnov (1:02.98) and Rebecca Lawrence (1:03.54).

Randolph-Macon and Washington and Lee commanded the first 10 places in the 200-yard freestyle, with the Yellow Jackets securing three of the top four.  Sarah Almond won her second event of the meet with a time of 1:57.24, and was joined by fellow Jackets Rebecca Stevenson (1:58.54) and Lizzy Buckley (1:59.70) in third and fourth place, respectively.  The Generals’ Delaney Rolfe (1:58.30) finished second, while Brassfield (2:00.73) placed sixth and Joan Hudak (2:01.53), Lauren Starnes (2:02.20), Kelly Ross (2:01.97) and Ann McCampbell (2:02.28) sat 7-10.  R-MC’s Ellie Shea (2:00.98) collected the remaining top-10 spot in sixth place.

Cassada and Tess Hayden recorded the top two times in the 100-yard backstroke with marks of 59.71 and 1:00.65, respectively.  R-MC’s Elizabeth Plowman (1:01.06) finished third, while Bridgewater’s Carrie Crowther (1:04.02) and Sweet Briar’s Melissa Simpson (1:04.37) placed fourth and fifth, sequentially.

The 800-yard freestyle relay marked the final event of the day.  Randolph-Macon’s Buckley, Stevenson, Plowman and Almond teamed to win the event in a time of 7:58.04.  The Generals (8:06.89) came in second and the Vixens (8:33.34) finished third.
