29 Records Broken, 13 Performances Qualify for NCAA Championships
GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Washington and Lee
University captured its 24th overall and seventh straight ODAC
swimming title after racking up 953 points over three days of
competition in the 2014 ODAC Swimming Championships at the
Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. The Generals
won 10 events over the weekend, including two on Sunday during the
meet’s final six races.
Emory & Henry College took home two major awards as Allison
Fowler was tabbed the ODAC Swimmer of the Year and Michaela Nolte
earned ODAC Rookie of the Year honors. Sweet Briar College
mentor Jason Gallaher was tabbed the ODAC Coach of the Year.
W&L’s Stephanie Foster earned ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance
Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition, and Guilford
College’s Morgan McKinnon garnered the Bonnie Kestner
Sportsmanship Award.
Women’s Results
Men’s Results
Over the course of three days, 29 ODAC overall or meet records were
set and/or reset as the 2014 championships proved to be arguably
the fastest in conference history. Additionally, 13
performances qualified underneath the NCAA Division III provisional
“B” cut time.
Sunday’s preliminary and final rounds brought about eight
record swims and four national qualifying finishes. Emory
& Henry figured in seven of those new standards. Nolte was
individually responsible for three records as her efforts in the
200-yard breaststroke preliminary (2:23.10) and final (2:22.81)
rounds twice established new ODAC overall benchmarks. Her
finals time marked a new championship record, while both swims
eclipsed the B-cut.
Fellow Wasp Fowler twice set new championship records in the
200-yard butterfly. In the prelims, she posted a time of
2:09.98, but her finals time of 2:22.81 bettered her morning effort
and proved quicker than the NCAA B-cut.
E&H secured two more records in the meet’s final
event. The Wasps posted a time of 3:31.94 in the 400-yard
free relay, snapping new ODAC overall and championship records in
the process.
The day’s remaining record signaled a return to the
winner’s circle by Sweet Briar College. Megan Monahan
out-paced the field in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of
2:05.07, which marked the Vixens first event win since 2005.
Monahan’s time set a new ODAC meet record and bettered the
NCAA B-cut.
Both of Washington and Lee’s event victories came via the
freestyle stroke. Elisabeth Holmes powered thru the
long-distance 1,650-yard free in a time of 17:50.36, more than 22
seconds faster that the second place time. In the 100-yard
free, Elizabeth Hardy touched the wall first in 52.95 seconds,
which came in less than a second shy of the NCAA B-cut
standard.
