Lynchburg College out-paced the men's field in the 2014
championships, wrapping up its 17th straight and 28th overall ODAC
championship. The Hornets won a meet-high seven events and
set three records on the day. Bridgewater College opened up a
new chapter in its women's indoor track history, claiming its first
ODAC indoor crown. The Eagles were victorious in four events,
tying Roanoke College for the most in the meet.
Bridgewater's Luke Sohl repeated as the men's ODAC Athlete of the
Meet. He won the mile run (4:22.69) for the second straight
season, and added a title in the 3,000-meter run (8:45.20),
finishing just 0.26-seconds shy of a conference record.
Roanoke's Jessica Mejia claimed the women's top athlete
honor. In addition to placing eighth in the 60-meter dash
(8.58), Mejia won the 200-meter (26.45) and 400-meter (1:00.05)
dashes. She also joined teammates Brynn MacDougal, Alexis
Janney and Alease Kinney in winning the 4x400-meter relay in
4:03.28.
Sohl has his eyes set on a third straight best-of-meet honor.
He enters with the top times in the 3,000-meter (8:31.22) and
5,000-meter (15:14.70) runs. Washington and Lee University's
Ian McDonald is likely to contend in the mid-distance and distance
events. He set the ODAC record in the mile run (4:12.51)
earlier this season, while sitting second (8:44.02) behind Sohl in
the 3,000.
The remaining men's record from the early season was set by
Bridgewater's distance medley team. Nevin Heckman, Danny
Breedlove, Sam Gunther and Sohl completed the event in 10:13.98 at
the Hilton Garden Innvitational.
On the women's side, Eastern Mennonite University standouts Hannah
Chappell-Dick and Kat Lehman both set ODAC records.
Chappell-Dick set her mark in the mile (4:56.37) as one of
only a handful of runner to eclipse the 5:00-barrier at that
distance in NCAA Division III this season. She also owns the
top time in the 800-meter run (2:15.07). Lehman established a
new standard in the 3,000-meter run (9:55.49). Like
Chappell-Dick, Lehman looks to claim a second event as she has the
best mark in the 5,000-meter run (17:43.77).
Lynchburg thrower Kim Alfaro also set a new ODAC standard this
season. She reached a distance of 16.18 meters (53' 1.0") in
the weight throw in early February. That mark is nearly six
feet better than the second longest throw on the conference's
lists.
