Randolph-Macon Tops Washington and Lee for Title in Five-Set Thriller

2017 ODAC volleyball champions, Randolph-Macon College

ASHLAND, Va. --- For the second time this season, it took five sets to decide a winner between Randolph-Macon College and Washington and Lee University. Saturday's affair happened to be for a piece of hardware as the Yellow Jackets lifted their third straight and sixth overall ODAC volleyball trophy with a 3-2 victory over the Generals in Ashland.

Randolph-Macon also receives the ODAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament. Washington and Lee, which entered the weekend ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III South Region rankings, will need an at-large bid to join the Yellow Jackets. Tournament selections are slated to be announced on Monday at 12:30 p.m. ET on www.ncaa.com.

"Instant classic" was uttered more than once by members of an engaged crowd in R-MC's Crenshaw Gymnasium. Just six points separated the two squads when it was all said and done, with the Yellow Jackets posting a 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 16-14 win.

After four tight sets, the fifth frame may have been the closest. W&L made the first run, enjoying leads of 5-3 and 6-4, the latter following a kill by Allison Webb. But the Yellow Jackets responded with a five-point run with kills from Rebecca McGilvery and Mariah Clark coupled with a trio of errors by Washington and Lee.

The Generals righted the ship and drew 11-all with the Yellow Jackets, marking the first of four ties down the stretch. At 14-14, McGilvery, who finished with a match-high 18 kills, smacked two straight winners to bring about the final score and begin R-MC's championship celebration.

McGilvery, who was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Miranda Hall and Emily Fitzwater, hit .312 on the way to her 18 kills. She paired those winners with 18 digs and three total blocks. Hall battled thru an up-and-down match to finish with 16 kills and 10 digs, while Fitzwater registered 11 winners against just one error towards a .526 attack percentage. She added four total blocks.

Samantha Sallade led R-MC with 25 digs, while Alexia Wolfe joined Fitzwater with four blocks. Colleen Beaver topped all players with six blocks, helping Randolph-Macon to 10.0 total blocks for the match.

For the Generals, Meg Guignon and Meade led with 13 kills each. Guignon and Webb, who had 10 kills, earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. First-year middles Brynne Gould and Courtney Berry combined for 15 kills and registered five block-assists apiece. Kiera Borthwick had 10 digs and four blocks. Katie Volk led all players with 28 digs with Guignon chipping in 22.
