R-MC Slotted #1 on Tiebreaker Over W&L

FOREST, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College sits atop the ODAC Volleyball Tournament field for a fifth straight season, but it was not as cut and dry as its previous top entries. The Yellow Jackets tied with Washington and Lee University at 11-1 in league play, which snapped R-MC's streak of three straight unbeaten conference schedules. Randolph-Macon, however, secured the #1 for a fifth straight season via its head-to-head win over the Generals in the regular season.

While two additional ties dotted the conference standings and shaped the selection of seeds, the remaining two quarterfinal hosting spots were clear of stalemates. Bridgewater College and Virginia Wesleyan University finished third and fourth, respectively. Fifth-seeded Roanoke College also was clear of a tied scenario and will travel to VWU for quarterfinal action.

The final three seeds in the eight-team field were decided by head-to-head tiebreakers. Guilford College picked up a 3-0 win over Shenandoah University on Saturday to tie with the University of Lynchburg for sixth. Lynchburg topped the Quakers in the regular season, awarding the sixth seed to the Hornets and the seventh spot to Guilford. Lynchburg will travel Bridgewater and Guilford heads to Washington and Lee for their quarterfinal matches.

Shenandoah's loss to Guilford left SU in a tie with Randolph College for the final tournament position. The WildCats win over the Hornets in late September gives them the head-to-head edge over SU and the final seed in the tournament field. Randolph will travel to Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal play begins Wednesday, October 31, at times to be determined. The semifinals and championship will be hosted by the highest remaining seed following the quarterfinals. Those matches are slated for Friday and Saturday, November 2-3.
