Football moved into its fifth week of action this past week and
opened conference play with a trio of contests.
Randolph-Macon defeated Emory & Henry in a battle of two
undefeated teams, Washington and Lee put up 55 points and caused
five turnovers in its win at Guilford, and Hampden-Sydney staved
off Catholic to remain unbeaten through five games.
Bridgewater played early, defeating NAIA Southern Virginia on
Thursday in Salem, Va. The Eagles also have not been beaten
in 2010.

In its first return trip to Salem Stadium since the 2001 Stagg
Bowl, Bridgewater jumped out to a 21-10 first half lead before
mounting a fourth quarter comeback to post a 32-23 victory over the
Southern Virginia University. Quarterback Hagan Driskell
was 16-of-25 passing for 227 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Running back Thomas Tate led the Eagles on the ground
with nine carries for 65 yards and a score. On the receiving
end, Tyler Beiler yet again went over 100 yards with a seven-catch,
122-yard performance. Defensively, Victor
Williams led the Eagles with eight tackles. The Eagles held
their fourth straight opponent to under 100 yards on the

Hampden-Sydney, rated 22nd by the AFCA, trailed 17-14 at the half
at Catholic, but 21 second half points and 19:37 of possession
helped the Tigers remain undefeated (5-0) and post a 35-27 victory.
Running back Evan King proved to be the battering ram for
H-SC as he capped off three drives with short touchdown runs and
then helped bleed off all but 0:02 from the game clock on the
Tigers' final drive with seven carries for 47 yards. He
finished with 71 yards on 18 carries. Quarterback Travis Lane
threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns. Sean Cavanagh and
Kyle Vance caught those scoring passes, and each went over the
100-yard receiving mark (4 for 104 and 7 for 103, respectively).
Defensively, Trevor Ikwild led the way with a game-high 17
tackles. Steven Fogleman added 10 stops. For Catholic,
running back Mike Pitsenberger burst out for a season-high 185
yards o n35 carries. He is currently second in the ODAC with
566 rushing yards. Greg Cordivari tossed three touchdown
passes to three different receivers as part of a 319-yard 24-of-32
passing day. Lawrence DeSimone (7 for 37), Alonzo Cooke (6
for 83) and Tanner Keefe (3 for 38) caught those scoring strikes.
Defensively, Scotty Braswell picked off a pair of passes, and
Rob Schaetzl and Vinny Cortese each recorded a sack. James
Fucillo led the unit with nine tackles. --- Box

Randolph-Macon, ranked 25th for the second straight week
by D3football.com, moved to 5-0 for the first time since
1986 with a 34-22 victory at previously undefeated Emory &
Henry. The Yellow Jackets scored 20 unanswered points in the
second half before E&H tacked on a fourth-quarter score.
Thaddeus Scruggs carried the load for R-MC in the first half
as he notched a 23-yard touchdown run to open the game's scoring.
Drake Sanders did the ground work in the second half as he
ran for the majority of his 112 yards and two touchdowns in the
final 30 minutes. Quarterback Austin Faulkner threw a pair of
touchdown passes. Earl Peoples caught one of those scores as
part of an 11-catch 109-yard receiving day. Zack Midulla
caught the other touchdown. Defensively, Randolph-Macon held
E&H running back and ODAC leading rusher, Caleb Jennings, to
just 40 yards rushing on 14 carries. Andrew Lonard led the
Jackets with 10 tackles, and Jaryd Grimsley forced and recovered a
fumble. For E&H, Dustin Beck put together a productive
day in running for a team-high 78 yards and three touchdowns.
He also completed 16-of-24 passes for 198 yards.
Preston Jennings was his favorite target as he corralled six
passes for 74 yards. On defense, Mike Young recorded his
third interception of the season, putting him into a tie for tops
in the conference. Devan Sproles made a team-best 10 tackles,
and Derrick Patterson and Travis Bolt registered quarterback sacks.

Washington and Lee scored its most points in 48 years on Saturday
as the Generals topped Guilford, 55-29, in Greensboro. The
win marked the 77th victory for head coach Frank Miriello, making
him the Washington and Lee all-time leader in football coaching
victories. W&L ran for 463 yards, marking the third-best
rushing day in ODAC history. Running back Luke Heinsohn
(pictured; Off. Player of the Week) paced the effort with a
career-best 223 yards on 20 carries for the first 200-yard rushing
game for W&L since 2001. Of his 20 rushes, 10 went for
more than 10 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown run. He had
three rushes of more than 20 yards. Brett Murray scored three
touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 rec.) for the Generals, with two coming
from Harrison Hudson and one for Sasha Vandalov. Quarterback
Charlie Westfal threw only six times, but two of his three
completions went for touchdowns. Defensively, the Generals
forced five Guilford turnovers. Jake Pelton (Def. Player of
the Week) was involved in two takeaways as he intercepted a pass
and returned it 20 yards, and recovered a fumble. He also led
the unit with eight tackles. David Sternlicht and Greg Barton
also intercepted passes. For Guilford, quarterback Luke
Vandall threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns. Ben King
caught two scoring strikes as he hauled in a game-high 10 passes
for 141 yards. Mike Williams ran for 55 yards and touchdown.
Defensively, Chris Jessup continues to perform well as he
recorded a game-best 14 tackles and a quarterback sack.
Kenneth Hyman made 12 stops, and Joseph Parrish forced a
fumble and made two tackles for a loss. --- Box
