Four Remain Undefeated thru Third Week

FOREST, Va. --- Four ODAC football teams remain
undefeated thru the third week of the season, albeit one via bye
week. Catholic University, Hampden-Sydney College and
Randolph-Macon College each moved to 3-0, while Bridgewater College
remained 2-0 as the Eagles had the week off.
Catholic got the action started via its second straight Friday
night contest. The Cardinals again were forced to come from
behind in defeating Carnegie Mellon University, 29-28. Down
7-0 early and then 28-13 with 4:46 to go in the third quarter,
Catholic rattled off two touchdowns and a field goal to win its
third straight game in the final moments. In fact, CUA has
out-scored its opponents 49-13 in the final stanza so far this
season. Greg Cordivari threw for 358 yards and two scores as
he continues to lead the ODAC in passing yardage. Running
back Mike Pitsenberger ran for 98 yards and a touchdown while also
catching seven passes for 50 yards.
Hampden-Sydney College, ranked 23rd in last week's
D3football.com Top-25 Poll, put together an
all-around performance in topping Ferrum 38-7. Wide receiver
Kyle Vance hauled in 14 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown.
The yardage broke H-SC's single-game record.
Quarterback Travis Lane threw for 362 yards and two
touchdowns. Running back Kirk Rohle caught one of those
scores and ran for two more. Defensively, Sean Stewart led
the unit with 11 tackles (7 solo), 2.5 tackles for a loss and a
forced fumble that H-SC recovered.
Randolph-Macon topped future ODAC-member Shenandoah, 36-29, in a
game that featured off-and-on rain throughout. R-MC ran for
202 yards on the day led by Thaddeus Scruggs 119 yards and two
touchdowns. Quarterback Zac Naccarato made up for a
lackluster passing day with three touchdown runs, all from inside
the 10-yard line. Defensively, the Yellow Jackets forced four
Hornet turnovers including a trio of interceptions. Henry
Kuhn, Jeremy Bowry and Andrew Leonard each picked off a pass, and
Cross Trued forced and recovered the same fumble.
Guilford College suffered its second straight loss, this one to
Averett, 35-21. The Quakers found themselves down 21-0 early
in the contest and made a charge in the fourth quarter, only to
come up short by the final whistle. Quarterback Grady Gamble
threw for 280 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted four
times. Receivers Lawrence Blake (9 for 136) and Ben King (7
for 126) each eclipsed 100 yards with King catching a touchdown
pass. Defensively, Tony Marsh and Alex Smith each intercepted
passes.
Emory & Henry fell victim to some last second heroics by
UVA-Wise in falling to the Cavaliers, 33-30. Wise returned a
punt 40 yards for a touchdown with no time remaining to post the
game-deciding score. The Wasps offense continues to perform
well as it collected 327 total yards. William Pearl notched a
pair of rushing touchdowns on the way to 50 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Kyle Boden threw for 209 yards and two
touchdowns. Adrian Jordan caught one of those scores as part
of a seven-catch 124-yard day. Defensively, four players
notched double figure tackles including Devan Sproles (15), Jason
Hill (14), Ed Smith (12) and Daniel Preston (11). Hill picked
off a pair of passes, while Tyler Houk also intercepted a pass.
Washington and Lee University experienced it first regular season
loss in 10 games as the Generals fell to Centre College, 42-35.
The Generals and Colonels combined for 892 total yards of
offense as both squads scored points in spurts. W&L led
21-7 early and 28-14 in the third quarter, but Centre was able to
claw back with 14 points each in the final three frames.
W&L ran for 339 yards on the day, led by 137 yards and a
touchdown by Brett Murray. Luke Heinsohn ran for two scores,
and Sean Pantwell added one touchdown jaunt. Quarterback
Charlie Westfal ran for 96 yards and threw for a touchdown.
Defensively, Jake Pelton led the unit with 10 tackles, and
Tyler Malone intercepted a pass.

SEAN STEWART, Hampden-Sydney, Sophomore,
Safety
Stewart, a sophomore from Alexandria,
Va., patrolled the middle of the field for H-SC's defense from his
strong safety position, tallying a game-high 11 tackles on seven
solo stops and four assisted. He also added 2.5 tackles-for-loss
for a total of 12 yards. In addition, he forced a fumble that the
Tigers were able to recover in the first quarter. Stewart helped
the Tigers hold Ferrum to one touchdown per-half in opening the
season 3-0.

KYLE VANCE, Hampden-Sydney, Senior, Wide
Receiver
Vance, a senior from Onley, Va., broke
Hampden-Sydney’s single-game record for receiving yards as he
tallied 228 yards and a touchdown on 14 receptions. Vance started
out the day with two 19-yard receptions – including one
touchdown – on the Tigers’ first drive of the game that
lasted under two minutes. Three of his other four receptions in the
first quarter went for double digit yardage, including a 40-yard
reception – his high for the day. He added three more
receptions in the second quarter to end the half with 10 receptions
for 155 yards and a score. He continued his work into the second
half, with four catches for 33-, 18-, 7-, and 15-yards. Over the
past two weeks, Vance has made 25 catches for 398 yards and five
touchdowns.
