FOREST, Va. --- Week seven featured a lot
of offense and a trio of close games for ODAC teams.
Hampden-Sydney and Washington and Lee remain undefeated in
league play after the Tigers held on for a 38-36 win over Emory
& Henry and the Generals came back twice against Randolph-Macon
to post a 34-30 victory. Bridgewater returned to the win
column with a 59-13 triumph over Guilford, and Catholic capped its
non-conference schedule with a 24-15 win against Apprentice
School.
Hampden-Sydney got the scoring started early with 19 points
unanswered points in the first quarter, and it would be a cushion
they would need as Emory & Henry came on in the second quarter
and late in the fourth quarter to nearly pull off a
come-from-behind victory. Hampden-Sydney scored its final
touchdown of the day via a 21-yard touchdown pass to Sean Cavanagh
mid-way through the third quarter, giving them a 38-24 lead.
The Wasps scored twice in the fourth quarter on a pair of
touchdown passes from Kyle Boden to DaVon Ross. The latter
score, set up by a recovered on-side kick, was tallied with no time
remaining and E&H down by two with a two-point conversion
forthcoming. The attempt failed, leaving H-SC with a 38-36
win. Cavanagh finished the day with 11 catches for 159 yards
and two scores. Running back Kirk Rohle ran for 149 yards and
two touchdowns. Travis Lane threw for 291 yards and two
scores. Emory & Henry's passing attack had a
record-breaking day. Preston Jennings set an E&H and ODAC
record with 21 receptions, adding 111 yards and a touchdown.
Boden set new ODAC and E&H marks with 51 pass
completions. He did so on 65 attempts, which is tops at
E&H and seventh in the ODAC.
Randolph-Macon commanded leads of 27-19 and 30-27 in the fourth
quarter, but Washington and Lee responded with touchdowns on both
occasions to pull out the win. Quarterback Charlie Westfal
led the Generals on scoring drives of 64 and 69 yards to put
themselves in position. After Brett Murray scored on a
six-yard run, Westfal charged in for a two-point conversion to tie
the game 27-all. Randolph-Macon drove down to W&L's
two-yard line on its next drive, but on third and goal, Rob Look
sacked the quarterback to force R-MC to settle for a field goal and
a 30-27 lead. On its ensuing possession, Washington and Lee
covered 69 yards in four plays, including a 62-yard pass from
Westfal to Alex Evans down to the Yellow Jacket six-yard line.
Two plays later, Luke Heinsohn rushed in for the go-ahead
score with 2:09 to play. Westfal finished the day with 329
yards of total offense (98 rushing, 231 passing) and a touchdown
pass, while Heinsohn collected three touchdowns on the ground.
Look collected a game- and career-high 17 tackles (8 solo).
R-MC quarterback Zac Naccarato posted his second straight big
game with 324 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-33 passing.
Christian Cook crossed the 100-yard mark for the second
straight week with nine receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Chris Pace led the defense with eight tackles.
Bridgewater saw its offense and defense put up 35 points in the
first half on its way to victory. BC defensive lineman
Dominic Jeter returned one of two interceptions for a touchdown.
The other came on a faked punt attempt by Guilford when
returner Tyler Slaton intercepted the pass attempt and sprinted
47-yards to the end zone. Guilford's defense also got into
the act in the first half when Satiir Stevenson forced and
recovered a fumble and returned 12 yards for a score. GC's
other touchdown opened the game's scoring when quarterback Zac
Halbert ran in from one-yard out. BC running back Anthony
Carter eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the third time this season
with 131 yards and a first-half touchdown. Willie Logan
notched two rushing scores, and Darrin McKenzie made it four BC
touchdowns via the ground game. Quarterback Carlos Gonzalez
fired touchdown passes to Chris Curry and Justin Bingham.
Stevenson and C.J. Green led the Quaker defense with nine
tackles each. Like Stevenson, Green forced and recovered a
fumble.
Catholic scored 17 unanswered points spanning the second and third
quarters to build a 17-7 lead on Apprentice. Tanner Keefe
caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Greg Cordivari to tie the
game 7-7 heading into the half. Brian Gongaware added a
23-yard field followed by a one-yard TD run by Cordivari to put the
Cardinals up by 10 points. Apprentice pulled two within two
points thanks to a safety and an early fourth quarter touchdown
pass, but CUA linebacker James Fucillo gave the Cards some
breathing room with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown
with 2:07 to play. Cordivari finished the day with a
season-low 183 yards passing, but completed 30-of-39 passes
(76.9%). Nick Cortese ran for 77 yards as the lead CUA back.
Fucillo led the defense with eight stops.
