Generals' Westfal Wins Lanier Award

Honors Best Division II, III or NAIA Player in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. --- Washington and Lee senior quarterback Charlie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) has been named the 2011 recipient of the Willie Lanier Award, presented annually to the best college football player in NCAA Division II, III and NAIA in the state of Virginia. Westfal was presented the award, which is sponsored by the Touchdown Club of Richmond and the Richmond Times Dispatch, at an awards ceremony held at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa Short Pump on Wednesday evening.

As a senior, Westfal led the Generals to an 8-2 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the ODAC. He led an offense that ranked third nationally in total offense (491.8 ypg), fourth in rushing offense (331.8 ypg), sixth in passing efficiency (171.7 rating) and 17th in scoring (38.9 ppg) during the 2011 campaign.

The 2011 ODAC Offensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-ODAC honoree, he completed 84-of-140 passes for 1,484 yards and 15 touchdowns with just four interceptions, and rushed 138 times for 738 yards and eight touchdowns.  He finished with 2,222 yards of total offense, the third-best single-season total in school history.

Westfal, who assumed the starting quarterback position in the second game of his rookie season, finished with a school-record 6,987 yards of total offense.  He also threw a record 45 career touchdown passes and finished fourth all-time in passing yards (4,710) and fifth all-time in rushing yards (2,264).

He posted a career record of 22-17 as a starter, including back-to-back eight-win seasons as a junior and senior, and he led W&L to just its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.
