Defensive Player of the Week

Miniard Culpepper, Catholic, Senior, Defensive Back

With 2:35 to play and Emory & Henry with the ball and a 24-21 lead, Culpepper recovered a fumble on E&H's first play of the drive in the Wasps' backfield. That led to the Cardinals' game-winning touchdown with 0:21 on the clock. Culpepper was one of seven Cardinals with at least five tackles as he made five stops from his defensive back position. He also broke up a pass as CUA held E&H to just three points in the second half.

Team News and Notes

BRIDGEWATER's offense rolled up big numbers on Saturday afternoon against Washington and Lee, but dropped passes and a third-quarter interception proved to be too much to overcome as the Eagles fell by a 52-42 score. The Eagles put up 484 yards of total offense on the day including a season-best 233 yards through the air.  Anthony Carter bolted 233 yards yards on 25 carries and tallied three scores as he amassed 289 yards of total offense on the day, accounting for nearly 60 percent of Bridgewater’s total offense.  With his 233 yards on the day, Carter is now third in the ODAC with 715 yards rushing.  Carlos Gonzalez threw for 233 yards and a pair of TDs, one each to Leigh Bradley and Cord Keating.  Bridgewater's defense had no answers for the efficient Washington and Lee offense as the Eagles allowed over 600 yards of total offense from the Generals in a 52-42 loss. The Generals rolled up 444 yards on the ground and an additional 162 yards through the air. Junior Salem Nganga led the Eagles defense with 10 tackles, including seven solo stops.

NEXT WEEK: at Emory & Henry (4-4, 1-3 ODAC) - 1:00 p.m.
Bridgewater will be looking for its third straight win over Emory & Henry when the two teams take to the field on Saturday in Emory.  The game will serve as the Wasps' senior day for its 13 players in their final campaign.   Last season, the Eagles topped the Wasps at Jopson Field by a 24-10 score. Emory & Henry took the first game in series history by an 83-0 score in 1927. Bridgewater’s first victory in series history came by a 15-14 score in 1980.

CATHOLIC's offense finished with 463 total yards, including 401 through the air. It was the fourth game this season that CUA went over the 400-yard mark.  The Cardinals ran 91 plays, which are the fourth most in school history.  Greg Cordivari set a school record for attempts (64) and completions (46), while throwing for 401 yards and three scores.  Cordivari threw touchdown passes of 12, 26 and 18 yards and registered his second 400-yard game of the season.  Andrew Ouellette (12) and Wesley Stringfield (10) both caught double-digit passes with Ouellette and Tanner Keefe leading the team in yards with 111 apiece.  CUA’s defense surrendered only 3 points after halftime to Emory & Henry after the Wasps scored 21 in the first half.  In the fourth quarter, CUA’s defense held the Wasps to a made field goal, two punts, a blocked kick, a fumble, and an incomplete pass on the final play of the game. CUA has now outscored opponents 77-36 in the fourth quarter this season.  The Cardinals finished with six tackles for loss, six pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick.  Emory & Henry was only 2-of-13 on third down conversions.  Anthony Albanese led CUA with 10 tackles, while Joe Tretter blocked a kick in the fourth quarter and Miniard Culpepper recovered the fumble that led to the Cardinals game-winning drive.

NEXT WEEK: at Washington and Lee (7-1, 4-0 ODAC) - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, 10/28
Washington and Lee and Catholic will be meeting for the 16th-time, with the Generals holding a 12-3 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1981 season.  W&L has won seven of the last eight meetings, including each of the last two.  Last season, the Generals defeated Catholic by a score of 49-14 in Washington, D.C.  In that game, W&L amassed 604 yards of total offense, including an ODAC-record 496 rushing yards led by three 100-yard rushers.  Luke Heinsohn gained 114 yards and one touchdown, Brett Murray had 101 yards and Harrison Hudson tallied 100 yards.  CUA is seeking its second three-game winning streak of the season, but the Cardinals haven't defeated W&L since 2008 (48-29).

Pearl also had a touchdown on the ground on the day … The Emory & Henry defense allowed 463 yards of total offense (401 pass, 62 rush) by the Cardinals Saturday, but forced three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble)  … After being up 24-14 early in the fourth quarter, the E&H defense couldn’t hold back the Catholic offense as they scored 14 unanswered points to close out the game and take the victory … Senior linebacker Ed Smith led the way with 16 tackles (eight solo) and had two passes defended … Senior Travis Bolt and junior Devan Sproles each had 12 tackles while Sproles added an interception with a 15-yard return … Senior cornerback Michael Young had 10 stops on the day, three passes defended and an interception that he returned 29 yards … Junior defensive back Tyler Houk had a fumble recovery while sophomore defensive back Jason Hill had a forced fumble… E&H’s four losses this season have come by a combined 12 points.
