in a thrilling 119th edition of "The Game." The back-and-forth
battle went down to the wire, with Hampden-Sydney stopping

tied the game with just 95 seconds to play. The Tigers racked up

crossing the goal line and tying the game. Senior linebacker Tyler

NEXT WEEK: vs. Maryville (Tenn.) (8-2, 6-1 USA South) -
12:00 p.m.
Hampden-Sydney will continue its season in the NCAA Division III
Football Tournament next Saturday, its fourth trip to the national
stage in five years. The Tigers will play host to Maryville
College (Tenn.) in the first round, marking the third time H-SC has
hosted a NCAA playoff game. Saturday's meeting will be the
25th between the two squads, with H-SC holding a 17-7 advantage in
the series. Under head coach Marty Favret, the Tigers are
4-0, including an 82-14 triumph in their last meeting in 2003.
Both squads enter the game as "Pool A" selections, having won
their respective conferences. On the way to the USA South
title, Maryville had won seven straight contests before falling
Huntingdon College, 45-38, in the season finale.
Hampden-Sydney has won three straight since falling to
Shenandoah in late October.
RANDOLPH-MACON came within a two-point conversion of
tying the 119th edition of the "The Game" and a shot at clinching
the program's 10th conference title, but Hampden-Sydney pulled out
a 28-26 victory on Saturday. Running back Will McGhee carried
the ball 38 times for 198 yards and two touchdowns. In the
process, he became R-MC's single-season rushing champ, leading the
ODAC with 1,676 yards. That eclipsed the mark of 1,551 yards
set by Zak Thornton in 2007. McGhee also occupies the #2 slot
on the ODAC's all-time single season list, just 54 yards shy of
Sandy Rogers' (E&H, 1986) conference record 1,730 yards.
McGhee now has 16 rushing touchdowns, which sets a new R-MC
single-season standard previously held by Remon Smith with 15
touchdowns in 1986. Against H-SC, quarterback Zac Naccarato
and receiver Greg Petrohovich hooked up for a touchdown for the
third straight game. Defensive, Tom Solak led the Yellow
Jackets with 10 tackles, while Tim Thoner, Kyle Norton Deshaun
Rogers each intercepted passes.
SHENANDOAH caps its second ODAC season with a
21-14 win over Washington and Lee, improving its league mark by
three wins with a 3-4 record in conference play and 4-6 overall.
The win over W&L needed extra time as Drew Ferguson hit
David Bell with a 22-yard TD pass on SU's possession. When
W&L took over the ball, Tijun Findley forced a fumble which
Michael Messick recovered to notch the win for the Hornets.
Findley came away with 16 tackles, while linebacker Byron
Mitchell notched a game-high 17 stops to go with a forced and
recovered fumble and two TFLs. His effort was enough to
catapult him into the top spot on SU's all-time tackles list,
finishing his career with 276 stops. Ferguson's TD pass was
joined by one from Justin Neff to Cedrick Delaney. Andrew
Smith ran for 66 yards and touchdown, bring his season totals to
890 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.
WASHINGTON AND LEE's 21-14 season-ending loss to
Shenandoah put the Generals' final record at 5-5, snapping a string
of three-straight winning campaigns in Lexington. Running
back Marshall Hollerith set W&L rookie records for rushing
yardage (1,021) and points scored (78) as the Generals lead running
back. He carried the ball 34 times for 123 yards and two
touchdowns against SU, marking his sixth game with 100 or more
yards on the ground. Quarterback Charlie Nelson also topped

apiece. Brandon Taylor notched a pair of tackles for a loss,
while Mark Burlee and Michael Unholz combined on a quarterback
sack.
