Randolph-Macon Falls to Johns Hopkins in NCAA Football First Round

BALTIMORE, Md. --- Sophomore Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) scored a pair of rushing touchdowns as the Randolph-Macon football team dropped a 42-21 decision at sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets finish the season with a 9-2 mark, matching the program record for victories in a season.

The Yellow Jackets took the opening kickoff and picked up a pair of first downs, but the drive stalled at the R45. JHU drove 76 yards for its first touchdown to lead 7-0 with 8:21 left in the first quarter. A pass off the hands of Hoy was picked off by the Blue Jays and five plays led to a second TD and a 14-0 lead with 6:58 left in the first period. Another R-MC punt gave JHU the ball on its 40. It took seven plays for the Blue Jays to reach the end zone again, leading 21-0 with 1:58 left in the opening period.

On the second play of the second quarter, senior Xavier Strothers (Durham, N.C./Jordan) knocked the ball loose and junior Jake Pinkston (Alexandria, Va./Robinson) recovered on the J18. Hoy ran in from the four to make it 21-7 with 12:25 left in the second. JHU drove 68 yards for its fourth TD to lead 28-7 with 10:24 left in the second

Following the first JHU punt, R-MC took over on its own 11. quarterback Burke Estes (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) drove the Yellow Jackets 89 yards in eight plays, hitting sophomore Christian Redman (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) on a 19-yard scoring strike to make it 28-14 at the half.

The Blue Jays scored early in each of the final two quarters to extend their lead to 42-14. Hoy ran in from two-yards out with 10:14 left in the contest to make the final 41-21.

Hoy had eight receptions for 34 yards and seven rushes for 22 yards. Junior JP Redmond (Midlothian, Va./Monacan) had 12 carries for 80 yards for the Yellow Jackets.

Estes completed 20 of 32 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown.

Senior Michael Farry (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) led R-MC with 13 tackles, including eight solo stops. Junior Ryan Burns (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) added 10 tackles.
