ODAC Football Report | Week 4

FOREST, Va. --- Late-game heroics featured in more than one game in week four with six of the ODAC's seven squads in action. Washington and Lee used a 99-yard game-winning drive to defeat #16 Randolph-Macon, while Hampden-Sydney completed its own comeback over Guilford to join W&L at 2-0 atop the ODAC standings. Ferrum built a big lead and got a little more help in the second half to hold on for a win over Apprentice School. Bridgewater fell to former ODAC foe Emory & Henry.

This week's ODAC Offensive and Defense Players of the Week are Washington and Lee quarterback Jack Pollard and Ferrum cornerback Kevin Williams.

THE GAMES | WEEK 4

EMORY & HENRY def. BRIDGEWATER, 38-17 | Box Score
Bridgewater receiver Viante Tucker ran in a touchdown from 13 yards out to open the game's scoring, but Emory & Henry rattled off 28 unanswered points on the way to a 38-17 win over the Eagles. Tucker also caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Matt Lawton. Lawton, who now has registered an ODAC-best eight touchdown passes, and Kenneth McCray combined to throw for 170 yards. Demetreus Jalepes led BC with 52 yards rushing on 16 carries. Brett Tharp spearheaded the Eagles defense with 14 tackles, while Nazeer Jordan made 11 stops. FERRUM def. APPRENTICE SCHOOL, 30-28 | Box Score
Ferrum owned a 20-0 halftime advantage over Apprentice School, but the Panthers needed 10 more points on a Seth Deaton field goal and a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown by Kevin Williams to withstand a furious Builders' second half comeback effort to post a 30-28 victory in Ferrum on Saturday. Williams big play came after Apprentice had pulled to within two at 23-21 with 10:03 to play. His score provided the margin to hang on despite the Builders posting one more TD late in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Titus Jones threw for 254 yards and two touchdowns. Tmahdae Penn, who caught three passes for 100 yards, hauled in one touchdown pass while Daniel Lamb registered the other. Penn leads the ODAC with five TD receptions. Zac Smiley ran for 65 yards on 16 carries. Billy Higgins led the Panthers' defense with 12 tackles. Drew Hill made six stops including a quarterback sack.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY def. GUILFORD, 28-27 | Box Score
Guilford College built a 20-7 lead against Hampden-Sydney over the opening 30 mintues of play, but the Tigers outscored the Quakers, 21-7, in the second half on the way to a 28-27 victory. Tanner Bernard and Braeden Bowling connected on the deciding touchdown via a 52-yard pass play with Palmer Smith's extra point put H-SC on top. Bowling finished with 157 yards on five catches. Bernard, who threw for 291 yards, also hit Nick Kalivokas for a touchdown. Josh Jones ran for 44 yards and two scores. Stephen Cash led H-SC's defense with six tackles including one of four Tigers' sacks. Brendan Weinberg, Jordan Akerson, and Joe Ambrosi also registered sacks, while AJ Hoggard, Will Pickren, and Hunter Spence intercepted passes. Pickren is tied for the ODAC lead with 40 tackles. Quarterback Bailey Baker tossed a pair of TD passes to Tre Alexander to lead the Guilford offense. Alexander ended the day with 92 yards receiving, while Baker threw for 249 yards. Paulie Menegar ran for a touchdown. Tyrese Pettaway led the Quakers defense with six stops including a half-sack and a forced fumble. Caleb Gibson and Xavier Garner recovered the fumbles they forced, while Milad Aghaiepour also scooped up a loose ball. Jaden James intercepted two passes for the second time this season. He leads the ODAC with four INTs. Aghaiepour added a sack with Lamar Adams accounting for a half-sack.

WASHINGTON AND LEE def. RANDOLPH-MACON, 25-24 | Box Score
Washiington and Lee used its mutliple option offense expertly on the game's final drive on the way to a 25-24 comeback victory over nationally 16th-ranked Randolph-Macon in Ashland on Saturday. It marked the first win for the Generals over a ranked team since 2015 when they topped #23 Guilford. W&L used a 17-play 99-yard drive over the final 7:38 of the contest to score a touchdown as the clock ticked to 0:00. Quarterback Jack Pollard, who earlier ran for a touchdown and connected with Alex Vaught on a 78-yard passing play for a score, engineered the first 10 plays of the final drive before being forced out due to injury. He gained 27 yards on five carries with his final rush taking W&L deep into R-MC territory. Stephen Murrin took over under center and scored the touchdown to bring the Generals to within one point of the Yellow Jackets with no time on the clock. W&L chose to go for two with Josh Breece taking an option-pitch from Murrin untouched into the end zone for the one point victory. Vaught finished with two catches for 102 yards. Alex Wertz (73) and Breece (70) combined for 143 yards rushing. David Onyejekwe led the Generals defense with 10 tackles while Dean Johnson made eight stops and intercepted a pass. Robert Poindexter made six tackles including one for a loss, increasing his ODAC-best TFL total to 6.0. Quarterback Presley Egbers ran for two touchdowns and running back Justin DeLeon added another with a game-high 89 yards rushing to lead the R-MC offense. DeLeon leads the ODAC with 384 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. David Wallis hauled in four passes for 38 yards. Tyler DeBerry led the defense with 10 tackles. Jace DePriest registered 1.5 tackles for a loss. Ricky Thompson broke up two passes.

SHENANDOAH | Idle
Shenandoah was idle in week four on its scheduled bye. The Hornets return to action on Saturday, October 2, when they host Bridgewater at 7:00 p.m. ET.

ODAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK | WEEK 4

FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kevin Williams | Ferrum | Jr. | Cornerback
Williams, a junior from Suffolk, Va., put points on the board midway through the fourth quarter to help Ferrum hold on for a 30-28 victory over The Apprentice School on Saturday in Ferrum. Williams made two tackles including one behind the line of scrimmage that cost the Builders four yards of offense, but his biggest contribution came in the fourth quarter after Apprentice had all but erased a 20-point deficit to pull within two at 23-21. Williams stepped in front of a Builders receiver and intercepted a pass. He out-paced all would-be tacklers on the way to a 70-yard sprint to the end zone to provide the Panthers with the margin needed to withstand one final Apprentice touchdown with three minutes to play. For the season, Williams has made six tackles to go with Saturday's interception and two broken up passes.

FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jack Pollard | Washington and Lee | Sr. | Quarterback
Pollard, a senior from Richmond, Va., helped lead Washington and Lee to its first win over a ranked team since 2015 with a 25-24 comeback triumph at #16 Randolph-Macon on Saturday. Pollard threw for 126 yards and a touchdown while also running for 48 yards and another score. He put the Generals on the board early in the second quarter with a five-yard TD run to knot the score at 7-7. Pollard and Alex Vaught caught the Randolph-Macon defense off-guard with a 78-yard catch-and-run passing play down the seam, again tying the score at 14-14 with 1:30 left in the first half. On the game deciding drive where Washington and Lee covered 99 yards over the final 7:38 to score a touchdown and convert a two-point attempt as time expired, Pollard engineered the first 10 plays of the 17-play possession before being forced to leave with injury. Before leaving, he ran for 27 yards on five carries on the drive with his final rush taking W&L to the R-MC 21 yard-line. For the season, Pollard has run for 233 yards and two touchdowns.
