Generals Fall to Cabrini in NCAA Second Round

SALISBURY, Md. --- The 12th-ranked Cabrini men's lacrosse team scored seven of the last nine goals to pull away for a 14-8 win over Washington and Lee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at Salisbury University.

W&L opened a 2-1 first-quarter lead on goals by senior attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) and sophomore midfielder Henry Holliday (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans), but the Cavaliers used a four-goal run, including three scores from junior attackman Dillon McManus, to assume a 5-2 lead with 13:48 left in the second quarter.

W&L sandwiched a pair of goals around a single Cabrini (16-4) tally to make it a 6-4 game at the intermission.  Junior attackman Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) scored unassisted just 12 seconds after the Cabrini four-goal run and sophomore attackman Michael Ott (Savannah, Ga. / St. John's Prep) found the net off a Pokorny assist with only five seconds remaining before the break.

Holliday scored man-up just 1:09 into the third quarter to pull W&L within one goal (6-5), but Cabrini notched a man-up goal of its own at the 11:44 mark to push back to a 7-5 lead.  Senior midfielder Andrew Marsh (Oyster Bay, N.Y. / Friends Academy) scored unassisted in transition with 9:37 left in the penultimate quarter to make it 7-6, but that would be as close as the Generals would get the rest of the way.

McManus notched his fourth goal of the game at 7:09 to key a Cabrini run that saw them score seven of the next eight markers, before senior attackman Spencer Kriss (Versailles, Ky. / Lexington Catholic) capped the scoring with a goal off an assist from junior midfielder Will Bou (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon) with 1:35 remaining.

W&L struggled to maintain possession on offense, committing 20 turnovers that led to a 55-24 Cabrini advantage in shots.  The Cavaliers also won the ground ball battle, 43-28.

Holliday led the Generals with three goals, while Witherell, Pokorny and Ott each posted one goal and one assist.  Senior Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison) played all 60 minutes in goal and notched 14 saves.

McManus finished with four goals and one assist to lead the Cavaliers.  Junior attackman Mikey Vanaman added two goals and two assists, while graduate goalkeeper Matt Nestler played most of the minutes in goal, making five saves.

Washington and Lee's season ends with a 12-7 overall record.  Cabrini advances to the third round where it will face Salisbury on Sunday at 3:00 pm.
