Generals Advance To Face VWC in Semis
SALEM, Va. --- The Washington and Lee women's
basketball team shot 57.7 percent (15-26) in the second half to
defeat Randolph-Macon, 78-69, in the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon at the Salem Civic
Center.
After going into the break with a seven-point lead (37-30), W&L
(14-12) began the second stanza on an 11-4 run capped by a layup
from senior forward Becca Bolton at the 16:33 mark to
increase its advantage to 14 points (48-34). The stretch included
three-pointers made by senior guards Kari Ann
Pfannenstein and Meg Ingram.
R-MC (14-12) closed to within seven points at 12:36 (50-43) with a
pair of Sarah Parson free throws, but the Generals went 8-of-9 from
the floor over the next 5:53 to bring the margin to 16 points with
6:22 left in the contest (67-51). R-MC senior guard Maggie Roy
fought back with a trey at 5:47 to make it 67-54, however, W&L
pushed the lead back to 15 points with 5:02 left in cruising to the
nine-point victory. It was the Generals' third win over R-MC
this season.
The first period featured five ties and no true advantage from
either team until two free throws by Ingram at 12:19 ignited a 12-4
run by the Blue and White, increasing their lead to eight (25-17)
with 7:19 left in the half. The Yellow Jackets answered with
five unanswered points to bring their deficit to three points
(25-22) by 5:11, only to have W&L score four more times in the
half and take the 37-30 lead into the intermission.
The Generals held R-MC to just 37.2 percent shooting from the field
(28-78) and 4-of-14 (.286) from three-point range. W&L also
blocked eight shots.
Ingram led W&L, notching 23 points and eight assists. Bolton
was one rebound shy of a double-double, recording 19 points, nine
boards and four assists. Junior forward Rachel
Warrick scored 15 points and junior forward Katy
Wilson registered 14 points, seven rebounds and three
blocks.
For the Yellow Jackets, Roy led with 20 points and five assists.
Senior center Taylor Wieczorek logged 16 points and eight points
and Parsons added 15 points, seven rebounds and three
assists.
With the win, the Generals advance to the ODAC semifinals on
Saturday where they will play Virginia Wesleyan at 1:00 pm for a
spot in the ODAC Championship game.
