2023 ODAC Basketball Tournament News


February 26, 2023
Washington and Lee University has another trophy to add to its championship mantle as the top-seeded Generals defeated seventh-seeded Shenandoah University, 73-57, in the ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament title game on Sunday afternoon. The Generals (22-6), now two time ODAC champions with this victory joining the program's first crown in 2010, receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship set to begin next weekend. Announcement of the tournament's 64-team bracket is set for Monday, February 27 at 3:00 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.

Randolph-Macon College held off a hard charge from Guilford College in the second half to post a 61-48 victory in Salem on Sunday and collect the program's fourth straight ODAC men's basketball championship. The Yellow Jackets (27-1), now tied with Hampden-Sydney College and Roanoke College at 10 men's basketball championships all-time, receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship set to begin next weekend. Washington and Lee University improved upon its all-conference haul from a season ago with three all-league selections and a trio of special honors to highlight the 2022-23 All-ODAC Women's Basketball Awards. Generals first-year post Mary Schleusner collected both ODAC Defensive Player of the Year and ODAC Rookie of the Year laurels, while head coach Christine Clancy earned her second straight ODAC Coach of the Year plaque in a vote of her peers. Guilford College forward Lindsay Gauldin received ODAC Player of the Year distinction, and Randolph-Macon College guard/forward Catherine Kagey garnered ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition from the league's athletic communications personnel.

Shenandoah University women's basketball is 2-for-2 is conference championship games as the Hornets lifted their second ODAC trophy in as many tries with a 56-43 victory over Randolph-Macon College on Sunday in the Salem Civic Center. Shenandoah (22-5 overall, 13-5 ODAC), seeded fourth in the tournament, earns the ODAC's automatic entry into the NCAA Division III Tournament field of 64 teams. Randolph-Macon (20-7, 16-2), the ODAC's second seed, is among the league's schools that will wait to see where they rank inside of the NCAA's Region VI for a possible at-large selection. The bracket will be announced on Monday on www.ncaa.com.

The University of Lynchburg and Roanoke College did not disappoint in their first-ever meeting in the ODAC women's basketball championship game on Thursday evening in Lynchburg's Turner Gymnasium. The Hornets fast-start and late-push was met by the Maroons timely outside shooting in the Lynchburg's 67-61 triumph to lift their second ODAC women's basketball trophy.

Junior Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va. / Heritage) made a baseline drive to break a 68-68 tie with 24 seconds remaining in the game to propel Randolph-Macon to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in Salem, Va. on Sunday afternoon. It is R-MC's ninth ODAC Tournament Championship and first since 2014. It also avenged an earlier loss to the Wasps 84-77 on February 3 in Crenshaw Gym.

The #4 Emory & Henry Men's Basketball Team (22-6) made history Sunday afternoon, winning its first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship by a 72-70 score over second-seeded Roanoke College (20-8).

The Lynchburg College women's basketball team defeated Guilford College 62-55 Sunday to take home the 2016 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title, the first conference crown in school history. Sophomore forward Caroline Naumann earned tournament Most Outstanding Performer honors, racking up double-doubles in each of the three Hornet tournament wins.

For the second time in four seasons, Virginia Wesleyan emerged from a highly competitive ODAC tournament with the league title and the automatic berth in the NCAA event. Virginia Wesleyan turned back Randolph College 65-61 for the ODAC title Sunday at the Civic Center. The Marlins will play in the national postseason for the eighth straight season.

Third-seeded Guilford held #1 Virginia Wesleyan to just 18-percent shooting as the Quakers topped the Marlins, 57-40, to win the 2012 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament. The title is the 3rd for the GC women's hoops program and its first since the 2002 season. GC heads to the NCAA D-III Tournament.
