GC Advances To Semis With Win Over BC

SALEM, Va. --- Gabby Oglesby and Jazlyn Gibbs both scored 20 points in Guilford College's 78-63 victory over Bridgewater College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament quarterfinal Thursday night at the Salem Civic Center.

The Quakers' fifth win in six games sends Guilford (20-6) into Saturday's semifinals against Eastern Mennonite University, a 63-55 winner over Roanoke College earlier Thursday. Guilford clinched the program's fifth 20-win season in school history and the first since 2003.

Oglesby and Gibbs both scored 20 points in the same game for the fourth time this year. Oglesby, the ODAC's Player of the Year, had 12 in the first half, which staked the third-seeded Quakers to a 39-32 halftime lead. Bridgewater scored the final 10 first-half points and the first bucket after halftime to make it a 39-34 game just 46 seconds into the second half.

Gibbs, a Second Team All-ODAC honoree, took over at that point. She knocked down two of her four three-pointers and scored 10 points during a decisive 22-5 Quakers' run that opened a 61-39 lead with 14:11 remaining. Gibbs scored 15 second-half points.

The senior guard hit another three at the 12-minute mark to give the Quakers a 66-43 lead. Guilford was able to rest its starters for the final eight minutes, during which time Bridgewater closed the deficit to the final 15-point margin.

Guilford shot better than 48 percent from the floor and made six three-pointers.  Morgan King scored 12 points for the Quakers and point guard Brittany Atwatercame came close to a triple double with nine points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Jaclyn Nucci was solid with six points, seven boards, five assists and four steals.

Bridgewater's Holly Morgan scored 18 points, 11 in the first half. Shannan Thorne finished with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Guilford meets second-seeded Eastern Mennonite Saturday (2/25) at 3:00 p.m. in the tournament semifinals. The Royals won both meetings with Guilford during the regular season, including a 68-56 victory in Greensboro last Saturday.
