Randolph-Macon Wins Eighth ODAC Women's Basketball Title

SALEM, Va. --- Sophomore Katie Anderson scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds in being named Tournament Most Outstanding Player as second-seeded Randolph-Macon outscored fourth-seeded Guilford, 91-84, Sunday afternoon in the Championship Game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference at the Salem Civic Center.

The Yellow Jackets (23-5) won their eighth ODAC title, all under head coach Carroll LaHaye, and seventh in the past 12 years. R-MC earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will learn its destination during the NCAA selection show on Monday, March 3 at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Anderson was 8-for-15 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. She was 2-for-2 on three-pointers after entering the game just 1-for-5 (.200) from behind the arc for the season.

R-MC had three score in double figures. Junior Sarah Parsons scored 14 points and had three assists. Junior Taylor Huber added 13 points, all in the second half. Both Parsons and Huber were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Quakers (21-7) jumped out to a quick 11-3 lead in the first four minutes. Guilford led 18-8 with 13:40 left in the half before the Yellow Jackets scored 12 straight, including six by Anderson, as R-MC took its first lead at 20-18 with 10:20 to go in the period. The spurt grew to 24-7 as the Yellow Jackets took a 32-25 advantage. The Quakers eventually tied it at 42-42 before R-MC scored five of the half's final seven points to take a 47-44 lead to the locker room at the break. Anderson scored 16 of R-MC's first 23 points, but did not scratch during the final nine minutes of the half. Parsons added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets.

Huber played five first-half minutes after picking up two quick fouls. She scored R-MC's first 11 points in the second stanza as the Yellow Jackets built a 58-50 lead. R-MC started the half on a 19-8 run to take a 66-52 advantage with 12:30 remaining.

The lead grew to as many as 15 for the Yellow Jackets. Freshman Stephanie Staples scored on a follow with 7:10 left to give R-MC a 76-61 cushion. Guilford scored nine straight points to trim the margin to six at 76-70 with 4:40 remaining. Anderson connected on a bank shot with 4:23 left to halt the run.

The Quakers kept the pressure on, cutting the deficit to four at 86-82 with 1:20 remaining. Staples hit a short jumper with the shot clock running down to push the lead back to six at 88-82 with under a minute left. Anderson hit a free throw with 36 seconds left and Parsons put two foul shots in with 18 seconds to go as the Yellow Jackets nailed down the victory.

Sophomores Khajae Hester and Hannah Livermon both had nine points for the Yellow Jackets. Hester was perfect on her shooting going 2-for-2 from the floor, 1-for-1 on three-pointers, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Livermon was 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Staples had eight second-half points for the victors and led all players with five assists.

The Yellow Jackets shot 54.4% from the floor (31-of-57) and hit 10-of-21 three-pointers (.476). Six different players hit at least one trey. The R-MC defense forced 17 turnovers, while the Yellow Jacket offense committed just 10 turnovers.

Morgan King (25 points, 15 rebounds) and Gabby Oglesby of Guilford were also named to the ODAC All-Tournament Team.
