VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The 16th-ranked and
top-seeded Washington and Lee women's tennis team claimed a 5-0 win
over second-seeded Roanoke in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference
Championship match on Sunday at Virginia Wesleyan College.
The conference title was W&L's 11th straight and the 23rd in
the 30 years that the ODAC has awarded a women's team
championship.
After sweeping the doubles round, 3-0, the Generals went on to
record victories at No. 4 and 5 singles positions for the win.
Seniors Sallie
Griffin (Warrenton, Va./Highland School) andChristina
Douglas (Fayetteville, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) each
registered two wins on the day. Griffin teamed up with
sophomore Meghan
Buell (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) at No. 3 doubles for
an 8-0 win and also took the win at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Douglas joined classmate Jen
Hall (Matairie, La./Matairie Park Country Day) for an 8-3
victory at No. 2 doubles and then notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4
singles.
With the win, the Generals earn an automatic bid to the Division
III NCAA Tournament, which will begin May 11-13 at selected
on-campus sites. W&L returns to action on May 4, when it faces
third-ranked Emory at 12:00 pm.
